Intel Pentium 4 3.2 GHz Temps

Hello there, I have an Intel Pentium 4 3.2 GHz Prescott CPU. It is an LGA 478 CPU, the motherboard is an ECS PM800-M2. The CPU fan is the stock one. Basically, the idle operating temperature on the CPU is 55 C, which I believe is pretty high. This is comapred to my i7 920 which runs at 30-40 C at idle. Other specs I can add are the following: NZXT Apollo case, AGP ATi Radeon HD 4650, Diamond Sound Card, Rosewill Ethernet NIC, Hauppauge TV Tuner Card, Corsair 400W PSU, 2GB DDR Ram.

If you must know, my i7 920 specs are the following: Foxconn Renaissance X58, HIS AMD Radeon 6970 (flashed 6950), NVidia EVGA GTX 275, Rosewill 1000W PSU, ASUS DS Sound Card, NZXT Phantom, 6GB DDR3 Ram

I'm sorry, I can't post room temperature. Also, I have not overclocked the Pentium 4, because I don't know how to, and I'm not willing to. If the temperature is too high, please recommend me a solution or CPU Fan, as I don't want to simply throw the PC away. And yes, I know its old, but its running fine. All my PCs run Windows 7, including this one, if it helps.

You can't really compare a 478 Pentium 4 thats based on a 90nm process, Netburst arch (longer pipelines) and is old to a 45nm core i7 processor. Pentium 4s ran quite a bit hot.

In fact, I think my old P4 3.4GHz EE (130nm process) ran at 40c-45c idle with a Zalman 9500.

The 45nm process will run cooler. Stock fans never do good cooling.

My question was if the P4 CPU was running hot, I understand that I shouldn't compare, but i needed to give some kind of info on the room temperature.

I think that sounds normal. I still have my pentium 4 3.2 ghz upstairs in my sisters room, I can check the temps tomarrow. I have the stock heatsink on it, but I removed the heatsink by accident and didn't bother to reapply thermal paste.

As I said, I have a Pentium 4 EE 3.4GHz ta=hats an older process (130nm) with a nice after market cooler that ran between 40-45c idle and thats also with AS5.

Basically if its 55c with the stock cooler then its fine.

55C for a P4 is not hot at all. 55C in general is not really that hot. I believe that temperatures have to reach or go over about 100C for temperatures to affect performance. If the 55C is under load, you definitely do not have a problem.

If thats 55c at idle then time for you to get a new 3rd party cooler and clean off all the old thermal paste, they should idle at about 40c.

Max operating temperature is 69c-73c but it will probably starting throttling before it gets anywhere near this depending on temp setup in bios.

I once had a netburst celeron that idled at 75c and reached above 90c under load!!!! It worked for about 4 years before it died.
