hi i have an intel pentium 4 661 3.60 GHz cpu

in cpu-z program i can see that my core speed is set to 2300 MHz(More or Less)
i wanted to know is there anyway that i can set the core speed at a higher rate and if so
does that do any good in my computer performance?

It depends on your motherboard. Some motherboards support overclocking but a lot of Intel ones and almost all OEM ones do not. There is software overclocking. And yes, overclocking improves performance, which is why most people who overclock do so. However, you can't change the fact that it is a Pentium 4, generally regarded as not a very good chip at the time and now very old. So if possible, overclocking might give you a performance improvement. But it will wear out your computer faster. Though judgeing by the age of the P4 it won't be too long before something goes anyway.

tnx for replay
okey i got your point
but what i want is to use the rest of my cpu power not over clock it !
i want to change my core speed to 3000 Mhz now its about 2300 to 2500
can i do it?
btw my motherboard is p5ld2-se

Well, first I would clean out the fans. You might be looking at thermal throttling. Second, I would see if there was any way to adjust in BIOS the clock speed, or disable low power usage/temperature features if they exist. Third, try using a third party program to adjust clocks back.

okey i overclocked the cpu to 10% in bios
now cpu-z shows me 2.6 Ghz
but of course the speed in bios is set to 3.9 and system information (in bios) show's me this too!
so now is possible that cpu-z is wrong and i am just using all of my power?
i also set speedstep to automatic

note:i tried 15% windows did not boot and gived me a bluescreen and in post i got an cpu tempture error
of course i thought it will take some time until i get bluescreen because speedstep was on !

still it is but i dont see my core speed getting lower i am not doing anything beside web browsing with my pc so it should be lower than 2.6.

in bios i see my temperature is higher than 90 !

i used Intel(R) Processor Identification Utility
shows me that the reported frequency is 2.6 and expected to be 3.6
however this software and Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool fail getting my cpu temperature
so i think the problem is my system can not get the correct temperature so for some reasons i get the 90 temperature in a moment and system is trying to cool my cpu making the frequency goes down but system still run's fine because the real temperature is not 90c so system wont shutdown and keep working but it wont use all of cpu power!
my cpu usage is 100% all the time but that is not a problem.
i still cant figure out why speedstep is doing nothing?

looks like this is hardware problem, must have something to do with cpu or fan(but fan is working correctly) so i dont know!

Then you are using the stock cooler; unless you removed it, there is a heat sink under the fan. Are all 4 pins fully inserted and locked in place? It overheats either because the cooler isn't fully making contact with the CPU or because you applied way too much thermal paste (or none at all). Remove it, clean the old paste and apply a very very thin layer of AS5.
