I have a Dell Dimension 2350 with a P4 1.6g processor on a 400 FSB. Would it be possible to replace it with a P4 2.6 with an 800 FSB? I realize I wont be able to run it at 800, but can't help but think that the jump from 1.6 to 2.6 would show some improvement? Just don't know if it is possible to make it work.

Thanks in advance.

Hi

you will need a Pentium 4 for socket 423 or socket 478 (pins on CPU chip)

use program cpuZ to find out which one you have

these are very old products latter P4's use a different socket 775 (pins in socket not on cpu chip)

If a 2.6 GHz 800MHz bus P4 ran at 400MHz it would be running at half rated speed (1.3 GHz)

Dell website says the fastest P4 is 2.5GHz for your model (introduced about 2002)

Thanks for the response. I have not had much experience with CPU's . The cpuZ tool is very informative and has been a great help in understanding the nature of the processor etc.

Hi Mike, Would there be anything to gain in terms of overall performance by installing a PCI video card and disabling the on-board graphics? I have also found a used P4 4.2 chip for about $35. Which would recommend to improve overall performance. I already have the card and would just need to purchase the chip. I would like to keep the machine running but also look at it as a learning experience to hopefully spec and build it's replacement down the road.

Thanks

Hi

A P4 4.2 !! never heard of that one

fastest shown is P4 3.4 GHz but it will not fit on your motherboard

Dell said fastest compatible chip is 2.5GHz

How much ram do you have ?

crucial memory site says
Memory Type: DDR PC2700, DDR PC3200, DDR (non-ECC)
Maximum Memory: 1GB
Slots: 2
Each memory slot can hold DDR PC2700, DDR PC3200 with a maximum of 512MB per slot.

cheap second hand AGP graphics card may be worth while, not sure about pci graphics tho.
