Hello, so I bought a Pentium D 945 and an RX 550 to upgrade my Dell Xps 400. My question is will the CPU bottleneck the GPU and if so by how much? The reason I had to get the Pentium D 945 was because of my budget but more because it was compatible. I had a choice between the Pentium Ds in the 900s series. Anyways will the Pentium D 945 bottleneck the RX 550, and if so by how much? Thank you.

Solution
According to this page, the Intel Core 2 Extreme X6800 dual core CPU is the tops the Dell XPS 400's motherboard can support... so that means Core2 Duos do work with the motherboard... and that CPU would be the one I'd recommend.

The CSGO system requirements page says the E6600 is the minimum CPU needed to play the game, or better... and better and supported CPUs would be the E6700 (10% faster than the E6600) - or the Intel Core 2 Extreme X6800 (21% faster than the E6600)

It was $6:p. I just can't upgrade to anything outside the Pentium D since nothing else is compatible.

I look at it another way. There are things you can't run, due to the CPU. So we don't have to consider those games. Of the games you can run with that CPU, will the RX 550 help? Yes it will.

Plus of course it'll help with HD video acceleration and other things of that nature. And it uses a very low amount of power, so you don't have to buy a new power supply for it.

Your actual question is impossible to answer right now because you did not mention the games you will be playing. If you ask "will Half LIfe 2 performance be bottlenecked by this CPU" then you can get an answer. About the only thing that can be said for sure is the RX 550 can handle any game your CPU can handle.

edit: I wrote the above before you made your last post. Those esports game should be playable.

Cs:go, LoL, Rocket League. Those games.

Edit: Just saw your edit. What about Csgo? You think I can crank up the settings and still get good performance?

Also forgot to say here will be the specs.
CPU: Pentium D 945 @ 3.4 ghz
GPU: RX 550
Ram: 4 gb ddr2 @667 mhz
Storage: 160 gbs 7200 rpm

Not sure if this will change anything. I really was hoping to at be able to play Csgo at reasonable fps.

According to the specified information, your computer motherboard chipset (Intel 945P Express) does support Intel Core2 Duo PUs up to the Core 2 Extreme X6800, and the CSGO game requires the Core 2 Duo E6600 or better which the X6800 is by 21%

Thank you, so what CPU would you recommend me to get from that capatibility list? Also I heard Core 2 Duos don't work with the motherboard. Thanks.
