Im running a p4 3.0 socket 478 on a gigabyte p4 titan ga-8ig100mk
and for 6 months i had it overclocked to 3.4 with stock fan and heatsink.
Recently, it has been heating up (borderline 80c+) and acting very strange, so in a desprate effort to save money and cool my processor down i put on new thermaglue and underclocked it to 2.8

its working @ 60-63c atm but its preforming like a peice of junk. Originaly when playing WoW with about 33 processes (3ghz) running my cpu usage was at 50%, now with just 28 processes (2.8 ) im at 90-100%.
i have 2 gigs of ram

have i in fact burned out my cpu? whats going on

Why would intel piss you off, if the cpu is burned, really its your fault for not using a better cooling system. 80+ is not good always when ocing make dam sure you have a real good cooling system. When you put on the new stuff did the core look dark blueish at all could you see the cpu codes on it if not than you may have burned it up

What are you talking about?

Originaly when playing WoW with about 33 processes (3ghz) running my cpu usage was at 50%, now with just 28 processes (2.8 ) im at 90-100%.

When you mention processes, I'm thinking about number of programs/dll/exes you have running, but I can't or the life of my understand what you mean by 3GHz and 2.8

If it doesn't perform like it did, I can think of two things to check. First, if there is ANY doubt the new thermal paste wasn't put on correctly, do it again. Remember, to much is just as bad as none. Second, check for any virus/adware that might be on the system. I admit this one is a streach if the number of running processes has gone down.

wow 80c+ thats a little toasty lol well maybe you should put it back to default... but i dont belive your p4 should be even at 60C ish i have a friend who has a p42.8 which is at around 50ish and intel are known for being extra cool

Since when have intel been known for being extra cool. Did I miss something?

ya my slot one runs, like real hot, I'm actually scared to say, its a fire place for sure, however the 805 is running cool but I have a kick ass cooling system. Someone with a stock hsf for an intel please let us know

Is it a P4 3.0C(Northwood) or P4 3.0E(Prescott)? And what vCore have you been running while it was overclocked?

Did the P4 not "throttle" its load if it got too warm?

If that is the case then you poor performance may be down to the CPU core getting too hot. It could be that:

your CPU cooler is not working as well as before

the airflow through the case has changed,

the temperature within the case has increased

the ambient temperature that your system works in has changed.

Define what piece of junk means... Is WoW really laggy now... does it take extra long to open things in explorer... have you tried Prime95 for stability?

First thing when you overclock is to get at least a better heatsink. You didn't do it but I doubt it cause your sudden overheating problem.

Open up your case and get rid of the dust with a can of compress air you can get in any BestBuy or the like. I also suggest removing your heatsink (and replacing it at the same time) and putting it back in case it got loose after moving your computer around the house by exemple.

Also, did you change your utility to check your cpu temperatuere? If so that might also be it. Get back to the one yu had before and compare the result.

Last thing. If your cpu is a Northwood has mine is, 80C is way too high. Mine is at worst 55C during hot summer day (as report by my Asus mobo utility) and 45-50 winter day after 2-3 hours of either gaming or 30 minutes of video encoding. I'm at stock speed tough cause it'll be my back-up PC shortly and I want to keep it stable for what it's meant to be use. But their's no way it would reach such high temp. If it's a Prescott... well it's a Prescott so what were you expecting?

Around 1996.

I guessed I missed something then. BTW when were the hot Pentiums?

Way way back in the day (we're talking Pentium/MMX/II, Intel had a pretty big lead in terms of heat output... AMD and Cyrix both produced considerably hotter chips. I still remember the first time a CPU physically burned me... I was stunned. Damn you Cyrix 686!

dude trust me it didnt stop there i once had a sempron 2200+, and it was a great CPU but i once got such a bad virus that overheated heat the CPU, it was so hot that i could feel the heat of the CPU onto my keyboard when i was typing... i have my pc about a foot-18inch away and from the keyboard on my desk and its was with an open case.....

have i in fact burned out my cpu?

Probably. Did you expect a product operating at more than 10% outside its specified limits to last just as long as one operating as designed? If you had been running at 3.0 and it did that, then you'd have reason to be pissed, but you weren't, so you don't.

Well #1 since the P4 intel has been a room heater. #2 the stock heatsink? (wtf) #3 you need to clean heatsinks regulerly for them to continue to work as they did (wtf stock heatsink?!?!) for me a cpu running over 40c is a bad thing but then again i been using AMD for a long time since the value of a pentium died when the athlon was released (P-3 was a nice cpu though) when you dont take care of your cpu by overclocking it with out actualy taking into account your burning it out faster and not buying a heatsink made for the task (ends it there cuz it could get mean) anyways as much as i hate p-4 cpu's this is pretty much your fault.
