Hello,

I am looking at purchasing the video game BF3 for my husband. My nephew looked at our computer and said he is not sure if the computer will run it. I am looking for some advice. I know we need to upgrade the GPU but I will let my husband handle that. I just want to know if he can actually "play" the game.

we have a gateway sx2800-01
4GB ram
intel core 2 Quad Q8200
vista 64Bit
running Intel r g45 g43 express chipset

the minimum requrements to run BF3 are:

OS: Windows Vista (Service Pack 2) 32-Bit
Processor: 2 GHz Dual Core (Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHZ or Althon X2 2.7 GHz)
Memory: 2 GB
Hard Drive: 20 GB
Graphics Card (AMD): DirectX 10.1 compatible with 512 MB RAM (ATI RADEON 3000, 4000, 5000 OR 6000 series, with ATI RADEON 3870 or higher performance)
Graphics Card (NVIDIA): DirectX 10.0 compatible with 512 MB RAM (NVIDIA GEFORCE 8, 9, 200, 300, 400 OR 500 series with NVIDIA GEFORCE 8800 GT or higher performance)
Sound card : DirectX compatible
Keyboard and Mouse
DVD ROM Drive

I am a greenhorn and looking for some techy help. A huge thanks to those that can!!

Kaily

Hi Finnski,

The trouble with answering this is that, most likely yes - you could "play" the game. However, even at the lowest settings, BF3 will be a very graphically demanding game.

Though your specs aren't terrible, there are a ton of problems that may (and probably will) be encountered in attempting to play the game / upgrade the system / tweak the settings.

Let's simplify: Let's just say for a second that your system is perfect except for your graphics card. Upgrading to a better card is very dependent on not only the available PCI-e slots, but also on your power supply, chipset, CPU... a lot of different things - including physical size of the case.

If this is your current desktop:

Then the size of the case alone will restrict from a modern card.

My advice? Get the game. If it runs, great! If not - no harm no foul - can always return the game or (even better) build yourself an awesome new system for a repectable price. :)

ohh .. you have alot to do ..
let suppose that your resolution 1650x1050 or so.. you will need to upgrade your GPU because G45 in impossible to play with !! to do that make sure you have a PCI-Express in you motherboard to put the card in it ;)
lets say an HD 5770 or gtx 460 or 6850 or so .. you should list your budget . . thats how we do it :)
that will require an 450w PSU !! keep that in mind.
other than that you hasbend will not enjoy playing the game ;(
the easiest way in to get a console like xbox or PS3 for like $250
