I'm using the Intel chipset to manage my RAID1.

One of my drives in the raid recently failed. I didn't have the money to replace the drive, so I just kept it degraded for a couple of weeks until I could buy a replacement.

The day before I purchased my replacement drive (Same brand & capacity), my entire volume went from "degraded" to "failed". Before this, I had a BSoD that was 0x7E. I overclock my system so I simply assumed it was my memory or processor, but perhaps the RAID was the reason for the crash?

I replaced the bad drive and upon booting up, the boot screen that shows the RAID configuration said my raid was status "FAILED", and my replacement drive showed up on Port 3 as a non-raid member (The old, broken drive was at Port 3 as well).

Upon going to the Intel Matrix Storage Console, I am unable to do anything to add that drive back into my raid. The second drive in my RAID according to the console is "Missing Hard Drive".

I'm on Windows 7 x64 Ultimate. How can I add that new drive back into my RAID1?

My system report is pasted below:

I've had a similar problem with both XPsp3 and W7x64Ultimate on Intel ICH9R chipsets. HDDs failing or missing on boot. I have replaced one HDD under warranty, but now I'm not sure the HDD was really bad.

Take off the computer side panel. Power-on the system. Disconnect the SATA data cables from each of the RAID HDDs, then replace the cables. Press the reset button (or power-off/power-on) Watch the monitor to see if the HDD RAID status has changed - this usually restores the RAID volume in the BIOS. See if you can boot into W7.

If that did not restore both HDDs to the RAID volume in the BIOS, but you got one, and the other is labeled "missing" or "failed," and the volume is bootable, boot to W7 and try using Intel Matrix Storage Manager or Intel Rapid Storage Technology (the new version of Matrix Management Console) to reset the bad HDD to normal and rebuild the volume. If the program won't rebuild the volume: I've also disconnected/connected/disconnected/connected the SATA data cable on the bad HDD while the system is in Windows, which has revived the HDD and allowed my Intel Rapid Storage Technology program to successfully rebuild the volume.
