Intel says 64bit is unnecessary

Ask yourself this: How many consumers out there own video cards that fully support DirectX 9? Hell, I know a few Compaq owners that are still running TNT2 cards. Why would you, as a game developer, fully support a standard that most users couldn't possibly take advantage of? The majority of people are still running DirectX 7 or 8 cards. That is why the engines are not fully supported. They have to be backwards compatible with all the old crap that's still out there. Writing software to fully support each version of DX is obviously time-consuming and therefore costs money. Something gaming companies don't always have a lot of.

Most games today would not run on a TNT2 anyway so that point is moot. All Geforces and up support hardwired T&L and yet...so few games utilize it.
The same is true of SSE. Most games today wouldn't run very well on something like a Pentium 2. Most people have a P3 or up or an AthlonXP. Why, then, are so few games optimized for it?

One reason: money. The longer it takes to develop / optimize a game, the more money is being lost.

The point I'm trying to make is that a majority of people still use older hardware... so you have to try and target your games to run with the broadest user base possible. That means supporting the old along with the new. These 'features' often get left out because there aren't enough resources to fully implement them.

You're hilarious, shooting at arguably a very respectable source to learn. You're good Kinney, keep that lovely attitude!

Theres nothing wrong with ars technica, I havent learned a damn thing from you or spud.

But your knowledge is about as good as a google search, and your opinions and logic are some of the worst i've ever seen in this forum.
Oh, and your debating skills are nil. You just have a bad attitude.

But now I do also and so I'm going to quit talking to you and hopefully pick something up from our more open minded forum members.

I Remember this. And I bet alot of older People who are on the Fourm do. Who needs More space then 512 megs of hard drive space? in the 80s Now we have computers running over 1.5gb of ram and computers Hitting close to 600gb of space. Or why do we Need 32 bit when 16 bit can do the same. Now go back and get a 286 with 512 meg hard drive. computer and Then try install Windows xp.

Frist You need More space.
Second You need a stronger computer with more Bit Rate. a 286 Not worth keeping. Unless you like that Old Dos games.

Now The same Question from the 80s is hitting in 2003. But with 64 Bit. And a fact people where scared to go from 16 to 32 and it took windows to help everyone along.

Now did you see a change with software from 16 to 32 bit. I sure did. Games went Box 3d plain color shades to More 32 bit color. And cpu that did more. From 8 megs of ram to as much ram as you want.

Just let time tell.

Kinney how about I link everyone here to what you said in the GFX forum, just so we'll see who really had the advantage?
I havent learned a damn thing from you or spud.
If you read what he wrote and didn't learn a thing, you're only lying. You're a liar Kinney. Either that, or truly dumb, that you didn't get one thing from what he said.

and your opinions and logic are some of the worst i've ever seen in this forum.
I've used and concluded my arguments with the arguments of the knowledgeable people here like Imgod2u and Slvr_phoenix. Dare to directly insult their logic and opinion then? Be my guest Kinney! Logic or not, it won't take long for you to figure out what I said was learned from them.

I can point you to multiple threads where I indeed said you were correct about the GFFX. Wow. I've said many times before it doesnt bother me to be wrong. At all.
But you were fully schooled in the gay arguement in the Other forum as well as in a A64 argument in which you picked and prodded to get me pissed off, while I did not antagonize, nor was I looking for a response from you at all!
Since you seem to enjoy pissing matches I will remind you the score.

Muwahaha.

Dare to directly insult their logic and opinion then?
Oh christ this isnt the forum of the gods!! I will dare and insult whoever the f*ck I want to!
Opinions don't mean [-peep-] and your logic is equivilent to that of a rabid fanboy dog. It is real world performance that is the proof in the pudding and we shall see. If you end up right, you will see me buying a Pentium. Though if you are wrong you will continue to root and pick and prod for reasons to buy intel, THATS the difference between us.
Begone boy.

BAH!

Kinney it's amazing at your age you still have such an attitude. That's poor, and low.

Words like "schooled" should remain for little teeny boppers, shall we?

Sure, but you'll see me more than I'll see you, that you can be sure.

I still dare you to resurrect the gay rights thread and see what went on. Too bad Svol is away for Uni studies.

Go back to Prison. Bubba Misses u. Besides this is a tech room.
oooo! I got a bite! And I didn't even think I baited the hook that well...

my sense-of-humour detector is having trouble locating yours

I'm simply pointing out that the only thing having a 64-bit CPU will do for you for the next year or so, is give you something to brag about. There were good reasons for the move from 16 to 32, but those reasons don't exist for 32-64... yet.
