In my current build I have a intel i5-8400 with a msi gaming plus Z370. I am looking to upgrade my processor. I would be either getting an i7-8700k or a 2700x. If I get the 8700k can I keep my board and get a good over clock out of it? Or am I better off switching to Ryzen with a new mobo and processor. Note I have 2400 MHz ram so I’d prob have to upgrade the ram if I went Ryzen.

Solution
Like Skynet said what are you looking to get out of the 8700k/2700x that your i5-8400 isnt doing.

You also have the option of flashing your bios and getting an i9-9900k

8700K would be cheaper and faster...the only thing I might recommend is going with the i7 9700K as 2 more real cores are better then two less with 4 virtual cores in gaming (or even the i9...if budget allows). Though the difference is somewhat small ATM.

I third the question of what are you using the system for, as the 8400 should still be a very good CPU for things like gaming. Also, what are the rest of your system specs? It's very possible that upgrading some other part of your system would provide much greater performance benefits.

Even with a high-end graphics card and a high refresh rate screen, you probably wouldn't see any noticeable difference between an i5-8400 and an i7-8700K/9700K in today's games.

I have $189 toward credit when I turn the processor in within the next year which I can then put towards a new processor hence why I was going to upgrade but if you guys are saying that it won’t be much of a difference maybe I’ll look into upgrading something else? My current build is an i5-8400, gtx 1070 fe (350 $ credit with this one as well), 16 gb DDR4 2400mhz, Msi gaming plus z370, cooler master aio, 650w 80+ Gold power supply, all in a cooler master h500p case, monitor is 144hz.
