Intel warranty service

Hey guys I came up with a wonderful idea to buy a used processor off eBay. If I was to purchase the processor with the box and fan and the stuff in the box. If it breaks would it still qualify for the 3 year warranty? And how does their warranty service work exactly. Ie do I have to send it in for them to inspect it before I can get a replacement. Thanks guys!

It depends.

Products that are purchased in a retail box are covered under Intel's 3 year warranty. Intel may require a proof of purchase, but it shouldn't matter whom it was purchased from.

Products that are purchased OEM/Tray are not covered under Intel's warranty, the OEM is responsible for providing warranty services. Note that if a system builder sells a PC that includes a retail CPU, the seller must include the box and fan assembly for it to be eligible for warranty.

EDIT: Just for clarity, the 3 year warranty period starts when the CPU is purchased from the original authorized retailer. If the CPU is purchased second hand, it may already have had part, or all, of its warranty period expire.

I think Intel warranties are non-transferable, so it will have no warranty. Not a big deal as long as it doesn't arrive doa as cpus rarely fail unless you use too high of a voltage, too much heat, or a cheap psu blows and kills it. None of those would be covered by the warranty anyway.
