Hi All.

I have an old Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo Xi 3650 which I absolutely love. It has been with me for a decade and I will never get rid of it.

It has the current Specs of
Processor : Intel T9600 2.8Ghz
RAM : 8GB (2x4GB DDR3)
GPU : 512MB nVidia GeForce 9600M GT (OC to 755/920/1650)
SSD x 1
HDD x 1
Blu-Ray Drive x 1
18.4" 1920x1080 dual lamp display

Its still wonderful to use as an every day machine and Windows 10 runs flawlessly.

Now the problem
I wanted to put an X9100 in it as it is the best processor available for the notebook, I had seen people using them before and successfully getting 3.4Ghz with throttlestop just a bit of bump from the 2.8ghz T9600
I ordered one from china for the low price of £17 as it was almost negligible in cost from a reputable seller, But when I tried it all that happens is the power light glows and the fan spins then 5 Seconds later it switches off.
I wrote back saying I think its fried, They however wanted to know if I could test on another machine to confirm. I didn't have a spare Core2 series laptop about (Only i5's) so now they are accepting it back on the condition that it is damaged but will not refund if it pass's tests there.

My question is, Would you agree its a faulty item? or shall I cut my loss's and go with a compatibility issue and stick it in a drawer?

Footnote : No I don't want a T9900 because they can still run around £40-£50 and that's just a waste of money.

Thanks for the Help!!

Either it's a bad CPU or the laptops BIOS just doesn't support the X9100, I would bet on the latter. I cannot find a CPU compatibility list for that laptop so I cant say for sure. I did find a BIOS for that laptop but there is no info on if it adds compatibility for any CPU's and it could be the same BIOS you already have installed.

Given the single fan cooling design on this system (Separate heat pipes for CPU/North-bridge & GPU) I was always under the impression a X9100 being 44w would not work what so ever.

But i found an old eBay listing for the same model and motherboard XY680 with an Intel X9100 as the processor. using the latest BIOS 1.0H which i already have.

Also on another forum (German forum) I found someone who went from a T5800 to T9600 to X9100 without issue.

but they are the only 2 accounts i have read so who knows. But temperature is not an issue with the modified cooling, Its around 39-42 Idle (Fans off) and then the fan kicks in at 60c and it doesn't go much past that nor the GPU ever gets past 72c when playing DMC : Devil May Cry (The Ninja theory version)

I know without doubt it wont accept any Quad core processors, support for those was added when they did a slight overhaul to the Xi series, The 3670.

But surely all Core 2 mobile processors manufactured on 45nm should work without issue?

The T9600 and X9100 are only different in base clock and unlocked multi, They both have 410,000,000 transistors. 6MB L2 Cache, 1066Mhz FSB. 45nm, there both Penryn processors with the x9100 a little older, So the microcode surely should have been in there? the voltage is barely different as well.
