Hello,
I just recently acquired a Dell T3600 for free and I am seriously considering beefing it out and I want to upgrade the cpu.

It currently has an Intel Xeon e5-1660, and I was thinking about maybe putting one of the 8-core Xeons in it (depending what I can get a good deal on) so possibly an e5-4650, e5-2670, etc. Do you think the default CPU cooler will cope? The pc also has a 635W PSU and I've got a feeling that may not be enough to support one of the high end xeons from that generation.

I was also thinking about putting a GTX 1070 (Asus turbo) in it as well (just waiting on a dual 6 pin to 8 pin adapter to arrive). The Motherboard socket is FCLGA2011.
Is this a good idea or just stupid?

Any advice is appreciated!
Cheers

Neither of those suggested CPU upgrades are compatible according to this on Dell community support:

Dell is usually conservative with their model offerings and many other processors can work. It seems like the e5-2690 is a popular choice in these and that the 2670 and even 4650 work fine judging by how many are available for sale with these in them.

If you got the system for free and can get the processors for free, go for it! And you have 130w tdp available since the e5-1660 is 130w. :)

The power supply is just fine--I wouldn't touch that. The system was probably designed for a gpu so check the original...

I think you'll enjoy this setup with the 1070 in it. Keep in mind that for maximum performance of the whole system, you will want a cpu with as high a single thread performance as you can get, and your current e5-1660 is better than any of the cpus you were considering upgrading to in that respect and is the fastest single thread performance I've found for this system:

Thanks for answering, I'm going to stay with the e5-1660 because the single core performance is better than all the 6 and 8 core CPU's of that xeon generation.
