Hi,

I am currently looking into building a PC and I am wondering if the intel Xeon E3-1231 V3 will be good for gaming? As I have noticed that it has the same specs as the I7-4790 but for $30 cheaper.

EDIT: I will not be doing any overclocking and I have a dedicated GPU.

Less money than the Xeon, faster clock speed, yes. There are a few games that will do better on the Xeon though, and that trend should continue. However, we've been saying that for the last 3+ years and we are still saying it. I'd stick with the i5.
Absolutely. If you are only looking for a gaming Cpu, then an i5 which will be faster and cost less is a better choice for most games. However, if you want the hyperthreading abilities then the Xeon is a great choice over the more expensive i7.

The Xeon will do great in games, it's just not the best gaming Cpu option out there for the price.

What would make an i5 faster and better for gaming?

Higher base clock, possibility of overclocking with the 4690K and most games are still heavily dependent on single-threaded performance, rarely stressing more than two cores to any significant degree, so the i7's HT is not particularly useful in most cases.

Can you suggest an i5 that would be faster for less money? (Note I will not be doing any overclocking)

Even though it's the "k" series Cpu, doesn't mean you *have* to overclock it. It's faster, for less money. I'd actually get the 4460 though, which is slower than that Xeon, but it's also 50 dollars cheaper. 3.4ghz for the Xeon and 3.2 for the 4460, vs. 3.5ghz for the 4690k.

If you are already getting the z97 chipset motherboard, it really isn't a bad idea to pair it with the 4690k Cpu in case you decide to change your mind about overclocking later. You can easily get 4.2ghz-4.4ghz out of that Cpu with a 30 dollar cooler, which will help out in games.

Okay thank you! Yeah I was given this mobo for free so no overclocking can be done. http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/part/gigabyte-motherboard-gah97md3h

Would you say that for the price the i5 4690 would be the better option for gaming purposes?
