Hey guys,

I've been asked to find out which of these 2 CPU's would do a better job at rendering and doing image recognition. In short it will be used in a system that scans images taken of documents and then uses recognition software to make out what it says. It has to be done as fast as possible. It will be used in a professional environment and is going to be pushed to its limits from time to time. The more versatile the CPU the better.

AMD Opteron 6378 16-core

If you have any other suggestions in the same price range that would outclass these I would be happy to hear them.

This is not an Intel vs AMD pissing contest though so if you only know one of them and is biased please don't reply. All replies that try to be objective are welcome.

Hope you can help me out here.

That's as close to a no-contest match-up as I have ever seen.

My only question is if rendering or image recognition is a higher priority workload and if so if the image-recognition work is mutli-tasked or multi-threaded.

The Opteron fails on both counts, it is not particularly fast at rendering and its single-engine performance is woefully weak compared to the Intel processor. The only reason I ask is in case a stronger/faster singel-threaded performance processor might be able to perform the image recognition work a tad faster.

Regardless, in your scenario, the Intel Xeon is head and shoulders (and torso and upper limbs, for that matter) better than the Opteron.

I haven't bothered to look for rendering-specific benchmarks, since the superficial passmark benchmark says enough.

Make sure to copy/paste the link, the Tom's forum software tends to truncate Passmark links.

The passmark you're showing me is of the wrong CPU's.

The Xeon is 8-core as the one in my link and the Opteron is a 16-core as the one in my link.

EDIT: Changed the title because it said 2670 instead of 2640.
