Just picked up a barely used E5- 2696 V4 from a buddy of mine for cheap. Waiting for the rest of my parts to come in to finish my build but was wondering how well do you guys think it would handle gaming if I disable 14 cores to make it 8 cores 16 threads comparing it to the 5960X. I know being lower powered cores compared to the 5960X it won't handle gaming as good but just how much worst it do you think it would be? Thanks

Systems specs:
CPU: Intel Xeon E5-2696 V4
CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i
Mobo: Asus X99-Deluxe/U3.1
Ram: 32GB (4x8GB) of G.Skill Ripjaws 4 2400MHz DDR4
GPU: Zotac GTX 980 TI AMP Extreme
HDD's: Samsung 500GB 850 Evo and 3TB Seagate Barracuda
PSU: Corsair HX1000i
Case: White Corsair 760T

That Xeon CPU should do just fine with all the cores enabled. Most games are mostly GPU-Intensive, with a couple exceptions (Ex: GTA V). You won't need 32GB for gaming, but if you're video / photo editing you'll need it. Good luck!

Thanks. I mainly game/stream on Twitch right now but want to get into youtube so will be editing in the near future.

Can you post a picture of this processor??? Closest thing I can find that matches would be Xeon E5-2696 v3 or Xeon E5-2699 v4

For gaming I would think something like the i7-5930K would be a better match for the other items used. The ones listed above are more like what you would find in 24/7/365 server type setups. I Don't know how much you paid for it or what's it's current market value is but i'd imagine it's worth more than your whole setup.

The E5-2696 V4 is the same as the 2699 V4, one is just for retail while the other is for OEM. For what I paid it's much less then my system.

So just an update. Put the E5-2696 V4 in my Asus X99-Deluxe motherboard and it fried the processor... so there goes a stupidly expensive processors. Blow my life

and also, the best CPU for gaming is a quad core one,due the fact that games are optimized today for 4 cores,so the most powerful quad core CPU will give you the best performance (6700K or 4790K)

My processor isn't officially released so that's why it isn't on the list but yes it works. Uses the R3 (2011-3) socket, you can double check with intel. http://wccftech.com/intel-assures-broadwell-ep-xeon-e52600-v4-processors-q4-15-feature-22-cores-44-threads/

LOL....I am using 16/32 2675v3 on my Deluxe for gaming, but the only two games that can use so many cores are GTA V and Star Wars Battlefront for now

You dont need to disable nothing, as whatever game you will be playing will use only the cores that it ca use.
As per performance in gaming, a xeon link that would obliterate any consumer cpu even if overclocked with liquid nitrogen.

Though Im pretty sure Your xeon is a v3 and NOT a v4.

As per cores , it means nothing, even if the bandwitdh is the same for both cpus, the cache, is way bigger on the xeon.

As a result while an I7 extrem processor will eventualy start boosting its clocks, the xeon will instead be able to handle the same with power saving mode like clocks..

That being said, it is wasteful to use high end xeons for gaming as it is, as if u are trying to run a rolls royce or a ferrari, that all they need to do is stay parked in your garage with the engine on to run the air conditioning.

Im afraid You are a lil you tube overclocking tutorials, victim.

Im trying the exact same thing as you
as for the motherboard frying your cpu its cause it doesn't support it, there is a line of X99 refresh mobo's about to be released and for gigabyte a bios update is required

you said you got the 2696v4 from a buddy for cheap...how cheap exactly 0_0 pls pls i need ='[

Works perfectly on my build - replaced 5960x for running virtualisation
