Intel Xeon E5410 vs Intel Xeon X5492

Hi everyone,

I would upgrade my CPU on my HP Workstation xw6600 (LGA771 socket).

My actual CPUs are 2x Xeon E5410 (12M Cache, 2.33 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB, 80W TDP) and I want to change with 2x Xeon X5492 (12M Cache, 3.40 GHz, 1600 MHz FSB, 150W TDP).

The E5410 have a 80W TDP and the X5492 have a 150W TDP...Could it make a problem?

The HP xw6600 came with a 650W Power Supply. It's a Intel 5400 Chipset.
I turn with windows 7 x64 and 8Gb PC2-5300.

No special needs and I'm not a real 'gamer' (last games played: Torchlight and Drakensang 😛).
I used to re-encode videos, test many OS in VirtualBox, things like that....It's just to boost the pc and see, for example, if I can re-encode videos faster.

I know I need a better video card for better result too. 😉

To encode videos, those LGA 771 CPUs are pretty outdated. If you have to pay more than 70$ to buy one Xeon X5492, don't bother. Get a new Intel i7 Quad-Core (~300$) or an AMD FX 8xxx Octa-Core (180$). They both are very good at rendering videos.
Or consider a dedicated GPU with Compute capabilities.

Otherwise, 150Wx2 should be fine with your 650W PSU, granting that your Motherboard supports the Xeon X5492 itself.

Yes, I know that it will be better with an Intel i7 or AMD FX, but my pc still work fine so I won't let it down for now.....Or I'll try to sell it one day, but if I can 'upgrade' it before, I could sell it a little most and buy a new pc more performant 😀

First of all, have you even checked to see if your motherboard supports the x5492? If it does, go for it. If not, grab a couple e5472.

I look on HP website for the supported CPUs, but they're a little outdated (for example, no windows 7 for the xw6600 on their site).

And I don't know how to check for CPUs supported by Intel 5400 chipset.

Yes the x5492 is supported, it is the fastest listed.
These days it makes more sense to go with a more modern i7 processor, but some of us have existing setups we want to push a little with minimal investment, just to stretch the performance to max. Enjoy!
