Hi, is this cpu better than 3rd gen i3's or even 2nd gen i5's? I am planning to buy this used in my area for my first pc build(Pairing it with a GTX 950). I would be doing gaming(Battlefield 1), video editing and maybe a slight amount of 3D design(Architecture). I do not trust sites like ebay and prefer grabbing parts locally, because you get the first hand experience with the product and if unsatisfied return it back immediately(So please do not tell me to go to ebay or any of those sorts). I am also asking this because I cannot get any good deals around the area even 2nd gen i5/i3 is overpriced. But we have strayed from the topic. (All cores active but with no overclock)Can the Intel Xeon x3460 handle these tasks at stock speed? Please tell me all the ADVANTAGES and DISADVANTAGES.

Thank you.

Solution
2nd gen i5 2500k is 27% faster at single core and a whopping 40% when using all 4 cores. In fact, although this xeon is a 4-core with HT, it barely matches i5 2500k's 4 threads when using ALL 8 threads, and that is very app dependant. Some games will use all cores, other won't touch more than 2.

Did you consider Ryzen parts? Video editing plus gaming is a great scenario for those chips.
Xeon is for Server or Workstation, and you should change something on BIOS for change the Memory ECC to be Non ECC.
for gaming, using Xeon, only make you stuttering because of Low performance on Single Core
why don't you try to buy a used i5 1st gen? and fyi, the 2nd Gen of i5 or i7 still overpriced, because there is no diffrence with 7th gen only 20-25% increased performnace.

I'm a bit late to the party, Well, sorry to say, but that cpu is ill fit for future proofing. However, if its only a gtx 950 and you're strapped for cash, it'll do, but there are better options. I'd have to agree with william on the lga 1366 platform, the cpu's are a tad faster and have the option to have 6 cores. I personally use the xeon x5660(Dell t3500) with a gtx 1060 with no problems, the x5660 is six cores and only about 8% faster single thread then the x3460 to compare.

The point is, the x3460 will work for now, but i wouldn't expect a slow 4 core part to pair well with any future gpu's.
