"I wanted to ask your thoughts on DDR4 and whether it's practical yet for consumer computers. I understand that with the emergence of on-die GPUs the need for faster RAM will only become greater. Is Intel considering the memory format for any eventual consumer sockets?"

"We're considering it, yes. We also have alternatives to that for on-die GPUs. Stay tuned."

Anybody heard recently about an upcoming "8-core" i7-3980X? Some of the rumor sites are spreading this, but do not offer much in the way of details or sources for the info.

strictly a rumor.

if you have the time, an alleged intel engineer did a AMA on reddit, some rather interesting stuff even if it was a fraud.
http://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/15iaet/iama_cpu_architect_and_designer_at_intel_ama/

if i have it right: some 8 cores do come out of the die but it is not possible to enable 2 of them . . .

Well, then some of those sites should be more careful with their wording, because they are stating this stuff as products Intel fully intends to put forth, and not just as a "maybe", "potential", or "don't quote me on it, but it's rumored that Intel might do this...." etc.

Edit: It also irritates me when someone says that their will be an 8-core SB-E chip coming out in the next few months, and piques my interest, when it's mostly fluffy rumor, and an old one at that!

That was my own question directed to a CPU architect working on Haswell. I missed the guys AMA so it was a PM question. He was verified so, yes, it's legit.

I understand that with the emergence of on-die GPUs the need for faster RAM will only become greater.

Faster RAM or more channels.
i3/i5 only use Dual channel DDR3.
They could go to triple or quad like the i7 and Xeons use.

A low end Radeon 7750 has 72 GB/s of dedicated memory.
An i5 3570K only gets 28 GB/s

In theory DDR4 should double that to 56GB/s, which means they would need at least 3 channels of DDR4 to get i5+discrete level bandwidth. That won't happen until after Broadwell.

With Haswell GT3 we'll get to see what kind of benefit a small on-die buffer gives.

Yea, but at some point there has to be a definition, at least on announcement.
The numbers will tell the whole story, then its only a matter of time.
Seeing other solutions with higher clocks doing as well, whats to announce?

the top core cpus seem to have tdp rating in the first slide at the top of that page. only the lp ivy cpus rated with 'sdp' (or bsdp... >_>) in that slide.
these chips are 13w chips no matter how they're looked at. i think that competing arm chips still use tdp instead of some convoluted new acronym. that is why intel, instead of actually using a better binned chip, decided to bs people into thinking they launched chips with 7w tdp.
