Interesting $700 gaming build.

Hello people. I have come to gather this part after a brief surf on newegg and forums.

I will be gaming
No overclock
I already have a monitor, OS, speakers, keyboard, mouse.
1440x900 res
I prefer newegg, and will be buying around 1 month.

Ok so i'm not sure about the ram, nor the CPU: im struggling between that and the Phenom II X2 550 BE, it would help if u guys could show meif theres any bid difference.

The other thign is that i found convenient that 80$ mobo in order to fit the old 4850x2 which matchs the raw power of a hd 5850 for 100$ less, so i though i would be a good thing giving it a chance to re shine.

If not, what would be a good combination of mobo and gpu for a rig that doesn't go over 700$

For mostly gaming the 550 is probably the better choice since most games do not use multiple cores well but can take advantage of the L3 cache !

And I'd also drop the 4850x2 and get a single 5770 for $160 saving the $60 (which I'd probably invest in getting an X3 720 BE or even an X4 955 instead of the 550) as the 5770 will give you about the same performance in games while providing DX11 support and the upgrade potential of adding a second 5770 if needed in the future.

Look at Phenom II 720X3 BE. Have for 109.00 OEM on newegg, or 120.00 boxed with cooler. You will be happier with tri core and 6mb L3.

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc189/JDFanning_bucket/order2.jpg - Here is a quick system build I put together on Newegg total with Shipping $729.25 - which is just a bit more than your initial build but includes all shipping charges. (unless you include the $15 MIR which brings it down to $714.25 - but I rarely count those in the cost as they take so long to process!)

A few comments on why I chose what I did :

1.) the MOBO is a Good quality Gigabyte board (i have the same model) and is based on the AM3 socket with the 790GX chipset and SB750 Northbridge so fully supports the Phenom II line and has all of the Bios settings to tweak any setting you want. (and has 2 PCI-e Slots in case you want to add a second 5770 later)

2.) THe video card is the same model 5770 that I have so I know it works well and there is one cheaper model @ $154 but it has an $8 shipping charge instead of free which makes it almost the same cost and I like the Fan on this one better.

3.) The PSU is a good quality 550W unit that will power everything fine for a good price

4.) The 955 CPU is better than your original choice because it has the L3 cache which improves gaming performance (and the recent $20 increase in the price of the X3 720 to $140 makes this a better choice - I got my 720 with the listed MOBO for $193 last month in a $40 discounted combo but that combo has ended !)

5.) The Memory and HDD you had already picked will work fine in this setup

6.) The case includes 2 80MM and 1 120mm fan for good airflow and included free shipping which would have added $15 to the build if using the Antec 200 and is $10 cheaper !

7.) The optical drive is just any old DVD drive for a decent price and can be swpped if you have a preference.

I think you'll be happier with this build and it also gives you the most up to date platform using AM3 and the 790GX chipset so should be upgradeable easily if new faster products are released.

EDIT : Just remembered one thing on the MOBO it has only 1 PS\2 port for the keyboard\mouse so you will need either a USB mouse or keyboard (I was using a wireless keyboard\mouse with 2 Ps2 connections (wound up switching my older wireless combo with o newer one that I had on another system in the house that used one PS\2 and one USB connector) - just wanted to mention it in case you need to get a new mouse or keyboard with the system as it will add another $30 to the price if you need a new wireless mouse\keyboard also !

Ok thanks for the 3core solution, it seems very atractive for 110$, but i am not sure where can i get the cooler... wheres the deal where the phenom II x3 comes with the cooler for 120$?? because the boxed edition ( which is not BE i believe) costs 140$...

Also, im thinking on this this mobo at 99$:

That $99 Asus is a 785 chipset so only supports 1 PCI-e x16 @16x and the second runs at X4 - which would be a bit of a bottleneck for the crossfire - you are better off with the 790GX chipset since it will do 2 @x8 speed !

THe difference between the other 2 is mainly the brand Gigabyte vs. ASUS and the ASUS 790X does have 2 PS\2 connectors but does not have any onboard video where the Gigabyte only has the 1 PS\2 connector, an extra PCI-e x1 connector and has the 3300 onboard video chip with 128MB of DDR3 sideport memory (while you will not be using it it is handy if the 5770 ever has problems or if you build a new system later and resell this system without the 5770 ) - Also I prefer Gigabytes onboard Realtek audio over the Asus Via audio. but either board will fill your needs.

As for the $120 X3 - Newegg raised the price of the boxed version recently (used to be $119) but they added the OEM version recently also @$109 (which I would probably have bought with an aftermarket cooler - Like this one for $30 )http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103065 ) which I'm gonna buy anyway since the stock HS\fan do not provide good cooling when overclocking !
