After finally building my first machine for gaming and attempting the fun world of overclocking I had my system stable with the current specs

CPU: Q9300 2.5ghz OC @ 3.2 GHZ with a minor voltage increase
GPU: 2x EVGA Geforce 9800 GTX KO
PSU: Tagan BZ 900W
RAM: Patriot Viper 4gb DDR3
Mobo: EVGA 790i SLI FTW

anyway after 3 weeks of perfect stability no random crashes etc, I power it on one day to find that my processor temps, as read by Core Temp, Real Temp and even CPUz, had suddenly increased from a stable 43 C no load and 51-53 C under load up to an astounding 50 C no load and 68 C Load

I immediatly began to panic almost convinced i had fried the CPU in some way, but after messing with the heat sink and reseating it and the processor, yes i wiped the AS5 off and re apped it, and even adding another case fan my temps didn't go down

Reset Bios to defaults and temps still at or around 60-65 C under load on stock settings

So i gave intel a call.....

I was informed that because of the DTS temperature settings there is no way to accuratley test the temperatures with any 3rd party programs but rather the only way to tell the correct temperature of the 45 nm chips is from the BIOS and that with these 45nm chips the thermal shut down on the Q9300 is actually 71.4 C and it is normal for the temps to be 65-68 C before you should start to worry....

The guy also told me that if I am worried about temperatures go into my BIOS and go to the monitoring section and let it sit there for 10-20 mintues and see what the temps do... I also learned that the bios the processor doesnt have anything to tell it to slow down or speed up it just runs

So I rebooted and went back in at stock settings with Core Temp reading my Temps (with a set TJ max of 95C) at 50 C no Load to 65 C Load at stock settings, however bios was reading 37 C at first minute and then 39C after 30 minutes

OCd the system again and came in to find that the temps were 44 C after first minute and 49 C after 30 minutes

Which got me doing some research on the TJ max of the 45nm chips and I began to discover that maybe in face the Tj max of these chips is much closer to the 71.4 C - 75 C before thermal shutdown

Sanpan,

Intel's response to your question was typically unclear and incomplete, and your "discovery" is leading you in the wrong direction. Consequently, you have confused the Thermal Specification shown in Intel's Processor Spec Finder - http://processorfinder.intel.com/details.aspx?sSpec=SLAWE - which refers to CPU temperature (Tcase), not Core temperatures (Tjunction). This is a common misconception.

To understand the differences between CPU temperature and Core temperatures, please read my Core 2 Quad and Duo Temperature Guide - http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/221745-29-core-quad-temperature-guide
