I just moved to an apartment a few days ago. I have 1 Ethernet port in my apartment all the way in my bedroom. I do not yet have a router so I am using a 50 foot cable to connect to my laptop in the living room. Yesterday around 5 I wanted to show my friend AMDs virtual super resolution so I moved over to my desktop which has a larger display. I carefully disconnected the Ethernet cable from my laptop and Wales with it to my desktop. Plugged it in and everything worked fine. Now I moved it back over to my laptop to play music in the living room but to my suprise the laptop said it didn't even recognize that there was an Ethernet connected. I was a bit confused so I did the general routine, run troubleshooting which gave me nothing, restart everything, didn't help. I moved it back to my desktop to narrow the problem to the cord/port to the laptop itself. The desktop now does not work either. I figure it must have been the cord. It's a fairly old Ethernet cord that got pinched in doorways every once in a while. I went over to walmatt bought a brand new Ethernet cable. It worked until about 11:00 at night when I moved the cord to my desktop and what do you know, nothing works anymore. Still hasn't been working since. Any ideas? Cable guy isn't supposed to be here for almost a week. Any help would be much appreciated. On my phone excuse typing errors please.

Hey everyone, OP here. Update time!
Guess what? I am using the first (i.e. not new) Ethernet cable on my desktop and it seems to be working fine now. Kinda scared to move it. Could it be the port in the wall especially if I am getting these problems sporadically with different PCs and different cables? I called my ISP and they said the port was functioning. I am going to try and disconnect the Ethernet and see if it will work on my laptop in the living room. Any advice/suggestions are still very much appreciated. Wish me luck!

So I think the answer might be a shitty ethernet port. I can connect to my desktop only if I connect the cord to the desktop then go back to the ethernet port and push it in more, then it seems to recognize this. You think it is the port? If so, my ISP would have to send someone out here to fix it correct?

that sounds like the ethernet port on the wall is bad.
unless the port is actually loose in the wall plate it is more likely that the connectros have just oxidized thus creating less than stellar connection.

of course there are de-oxidizing sprays and such but if they are flammable/conduct electricity, using it on a port that is obviously connected is a really bad idea.

This is what I am thinking, I am going to call up my isp to see if they want to fix this.

I don't think that would fix this issue, you see that the problem is most likely that the port in the wall is bad.
Above was evidenced by connection either working or not by wiggling/pushing the cable by hand to the wall socket while it was connected there to begin with.

Meaning that adding wireless router to the wall to remove cabling on the floor wouldn't really fix the real issue.
That aside, this is somewhat old topic and as such most likely been fixed in some manner that original poster just forgot to mention here.
