I keep getting random BSOD's that dont seem to be realted to anything.
It fist started after i upgraded my motherboard, memory and cpu. I didnt do a clean install of windows so i thought it was that. Done a clean install and that stopped it.

Then i upgraded my HDD to a SSD and my GPU . I also moved my last HDD to a usb enclosure. This caused random black screens and my SSD to not show up in the bios, i now uses the HDD in a NAS and i havent had any problems in days. Played red dead 2 all day for two of them, pc was on for 48 hrs at one point coping files an no issues. Today i turn it on, watch a video from the NAS and i get a WHEA uncorrectable error, it restarts and does it again 20 min later just looking at the web. Hasnt happend for 2 hrs on the 2nd restart.

I have no idea whats wrong here and its driving me nuts please help! lol

Heats doesnt seem to be a issue its a custom loop and evryting is in the low 30s to high 20s at idle. Whent he BSOD happend it was all but idle so the temps where the same.

Top crash occurred while running intel updater, which is odd.

KSTHUNK.sys - Microsoft Kernel Streaming WOW64 Thunk Service system driver file having not seen this before,... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thunk - its tied into wow64 which is the service windows uses to run 32bit drivers.

seems to tie into audio, this is for error 2

WHEA errors, oh my fav (sarcasm)
WHEA = WIndows Hardware Error architecture. They are errors called by CPU but not necessarily caused by it
Can be be caused by overclocking - I see you aren't
Can be caused by Overclocking software (or software that can change CPU values)
Uninstall AI Suite as it contains ASio.sys which can change CPU values.
Updating BIOS can fix these errors.

Can be caused by overheating.
Can be caused by any hardware
can be caused by bad device drivers... bad as in old.

both WHEA errors appear to have been caused by drivers although none showed their names.

Any idea what DFX Audio ENhancer is? its driver is too old for win 10

Are there any newer sound blaster drivers?
Jul 06 2017cthda.sysSound Blaster HD Audio driver (Creative Technology Ltd)
Jul 06 2017cthdb.sysSound Blaster HD Audio Controller driver (Creative Technology Ltd)

I suspect they caused by an audio device driver.

update bios and also grab latest chipset drivers from the Asus website, they might help. latest version of IMEI is 2 days ago. ONly update them if you also do the bios first. - https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/ROG-MAXIMUS-XI-FORMULA/HelpDesk_Download/

manual will have a section in it showing how to update bios, look at page 3-30 here as you can do it over the internet now - https://dlcdnets.asus.com/pub/ASUS/...A/E14940_ROG_MAXIMUS_XI_FORMULA_UM_V3_WEB.pdf

Ok so DFX is https://www.fxsound.com/download Its starnge its old because i have almost the newest version, i have 13.026 and the newest is 13.027. it was one of the first things i installed because my sound quality was much lower when i built the new pc even though i used the card from the old one.

Im pretty sure the soundblaster drivers are the newest one.

I dont have the newest bios i updated it about 3 days ago to the one before the newest.

Ai SUite is gone because i use argus monitor.

Im reallly not looking forward to updating the bios again it makes me very nervous.

I already updated the sound drivers.

Thanks for you help and patience.

Thank you. Please keep helping and i will reply as soon as i can just dont give up on me. My grandfather who passed away 6 hrs ago after months of being ill along with my grandmother who is still here suprised me by paying over half the bill for my new pc about a month or so ago, he never made it over to see it. I have to get this working right, i cant waste the last gift im going to get from him, it would be a terrible diservice to both of them. In fact my grandmother keeps asking how its gowing and since i cant lie to her so i gotta fix this. I only metioned it because i do not want you to think my late replys means i dont aprciate the time you and others are taking to help or think that i can/will ignore the problem because of the circumstances.

I wasn't giving up on you, I just think you should be with family right now. There are more important things than the PC, I am sure.

I am sorry for your loss :(

if you get any more crashes since the last ones, please supply them as they might point to unseen problems.

if PC is only a month old, even if parts are to blame they shouldn't cost anything to replace.

I have a course the next 4 days but I have asked the other mods to look in and help you where they can.

Looking through Gardenman's dump posts:
  • I saw the first one was a clock watchdog timeout, which is a CPU hang.
  • The second and third is DPC Violation, which can commonly be a driver issue, however when it is, it's quite commonly in the stack trace, in this dump it is not however. I would likely need to look into the dump files manually to see a bit further. Only real way to probably pull this one out is to use Driver Verifier.
  • Last 2 are 124 WHEA - as Colif has already stated, is a hardware error, and 99% of the time is a hardware fault.
Code:
ffffbf0b`958ff6a8 00000000`00000000 : 00000000`00000000 00000000`00000000 00000000`00000000 00000000`00000000 : intelppm!MWaitIdle+0x1f
Also based on this code above. Being as you've have two WHEA and a Clock Timeout, I'd suggest testing your CPU if you haven't done so already: CPU Stress and Diagnostic Tests
I'll try and look through the dump files to see if anything else can be pulled out manually, but I doubt it. I think most other items have already been covered.

Also, I am sorry to hear of the loss, I hope all is OK and wish your family well.

I just left the room and came bk and somhow it crashed doing nothing at all, I just put the latest dump file into the same place as the last ones.

Thank you all so much for you help and condolences.

I have run prime 95 before but my cpu hits 100c and the test stops even with custom loop but I have been told this is normal for my cpu several times so didnt think anything of it. It never gets that hot during normal use just the odd spike into the 90s for under a second. Most if not all the bsod have been at idle, under 30c.

I 90% sure i run the Intel test already and it come up as OK, I been dealing with this for over a month and with whats going on ATM its hard to rmbr. I will run it again as soon as i can to be sure.

i can play any game for over 12 hrs at time multiple days and it has on,y crashed one time in game, it mostly does it at idle or just browsing tje internet or with music/movies. It can go days and weeks with no crash too. But every time I think I got it fixed it doest it again.

Last 2 are 124 WHEA - as Colif has already stated, is a hardware error, and 99% of the time is a hardware fault.
my hit rate with whea isn't that high, if it was always hardware I wouldn't test for drivers. We had this discussion before, its not so simple. Many of them have been drivers in the past. You sort of have to test everything to eliminate the parts that do work.

temps are where Prime tests fail. we don't really have a 3rd opinion CPU test besides run AIDA benchmarks but if you say most BSOD happen at idle, benchmarking system isn't going to reveal the cause.

I can't read dumps but PC Tailor will when he replies later.

i saw the intelppm driver mentioned in whea error too. updating chipset driver may have helped there?

I understand what you're saying, but since undertaking training from some BSOD professionals that I'm still going through, I've come to see that whilst it can be software/firmware, it really is hardware most of the time.

My main concern from this is the watchdgo timeout too - if it was a full dump I might be able to pull out a little more. And minidump can tell us whioch processor hung but and typically why, but not necessarily what from.

also I can't see a new dump file in the onefile location unfortunately?
I do think at this point the easiest thing to do would be to run driver verifier, if this blames a MS driver, then we are likely looking at hardware.

Ok the newest dump file is in the onedrive, it just didnt sync.

Last time i used driver verifier i nearly got it stuck in a bootloop and only just manged to get it out of it by turnig it off really fast as it booted into windows. That was a hdd though, now with a ssd i dont think ill be so lucky if it happens this time.

I had a cheap mouse bungee/usb hub that failed yesterday when i pluged my new keyboard into it, could it be that by any chance? i havent had a crash since i unplugged it and its been there since i built it, but it is early days yet, it hasnt even been 24 hrs.

I find it wierd if it was hardware how it could play games like read dead and total warhammer 2 maxed out for hours, many times 12 or more at a time with no issues (only one time did it crash in game and even that was after hours) then crash at idle or browsing the net about 2 hours or more after closing the game.

Also somone mentioned sound, along with my PSU and Optical drive my sound card is the only other part left from my last pc and isnt brand new.

Thanks for everyones help so far.

Just had another one, again about a hour after playing games for 8+ hours while browsing the net. Other than one they seem to happen toward the end of my day and again other than one they happen max once every 24hrs. Some times it will go a day, a few days or once 2 weeks with out crashing. Im doing the same kind of things for the same amount of time everyday. I have a lot of down time right now so im using it a lot. Seems maybe it happens less when i restart in the middle of the day for whatever reason. This dump file is in the one drive too.

bootloops in driver verifer is why i put precautions in my instructions for them. If you look at the link in PC tailors sig, 2nd post is all about DV.

I wondered about the Sound card, its drivers aren't the newest (I mean, they are likely the newest released, but they not recent, is what I mean). Can you take it out and see if you still get the errors? Sound on motherboards isn't so bad really. If you still bsod, you at least know its not caused by the soundcard.

whea can be a process of elimination, so testing all the hardware is best way to figure out cause.
below is a list of tests for different parts of pc, you may have already done some (I left CPU off as you have tested it)
Ram
https://www.memtest86.com/
GPU (Don't run these at same time)
https://benchmark.unigine.com/heaven
HDD
HD Sentinel - https://www.hdsentinel.com/hard_disk_sentinel_trial.php
Samsung - https://www.samsung.com/semiconductor/minisite/ssd/product/consumer/magician/
WD - https://support.wdc.com/downloads.aspx?p=3&lang=en
Seagate - https://www.seagate.com/au/en/support/downloads/seatools/seatools-win-master/
And many more…
PSU
the paper clip method - https://forums.tomshardware.com/threads/what-is-the-paperclip-method-of-testing-a-psu.1336402/
or multimeter,
or in the BIOS to check the +3.3V, +5V, and +12V. - https://www.lifewire.com/power-supply-voltage-tolerances-2624583
Motherboard - There are none. You test everything else first and if they are all okay, you have to assume its motherboard

To be honest, if you down to Motherboard or PSU, I would suggest getting a store to test the PC as they should have spare parts that they can swap in to confirm what part is at fault, instead of guessing.

I have run the dump file(s) and you can see the full report(s) here:

https://pste.eu/p/ZfBu.html (WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR)

Summary of findings:
WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR
"A WHEA ERROR is almost solely hardware based. It is possible in rare circumstances for this to be a driver, however it is very unlikely. It is often caused by:
  • Component overheating
  • Unstable overclocking or XMP profile
  • Faulty hardware"

Some things to consider:
  • At this point, only really a full dump file might help us diagnose the issue - as it is WHEA.
  • There is still LOTS of third party drivers running, and in some circumstances it can be drivers that cause the WHEA.
  • Based on the stack below There are no other loaded commands - which could be even more indicative of hardware if nothing else was really performing an action.
Code:
STACK_TEXT:
fffff802`76c24938 00000000`00000000 : 00000000`00000000 00000000`00000000 00000000`00000000 00000000`00000000 : nt!KeBugCheckEx

- The fact that Driver Verifier sent you into a boot loop also gives me a little red flag - purely as it's likely core OS that's becoming a problem, which will usually only happen if it's hardware or the core OS is corrupt. I may have missed it, have you tried clean reinstalling?

Ok so i start testing hardware?

Is the intel CPU test actually any good? I mean are any of these tests any good? I have a terrible feeling they will all show everythign is fine and ill still get this problem.

I did CPU like you said its ok.
I run memtest86 earlier, i only had time for 4 passes, i think im suposed to do 8 does it have to be back to back or can i do 2 4 pass sets? No errors on the first for passes btw.
I will run tests on my SSD
I will test the GPU but i would have thought runing rdr2 for hours would have been a pretty good test
I will check the PSU in the bios, i also have a slightly older 1000w corsair PSU around somewhere, its unlikely their both bad right?

I have clean installed windows twice.

Problem is where i live is the ass end of no place, im the most compitent IT guy for miles, even if i payed a fortune to get the best around im not sure id trust these parochial IT guys. None of the stores i know are much better if any better equiped than i am either. I was one of them for years a while back so i know how bad they really are, im not great at this myself it seems but i was better than them.

Whats the chances its the sound card, i have been thinking of pulling it to test it, id have to get a adapter though because my card its conected to a old school seprates amp that doesnt take 3.5mm jack. Its one of the oldest parts, i need a new one anyway but it would take time for me to get the 300 toghter for a AE9, because of xmas and other stuff i am bleeding cash, i all but broke my bank buidling this thing, id be totally broke if my grandparents hadnt helped. It might be worth noting that i was having a similar problem to this pretty much the whole time i had my last PC, i though it was the motherboard overheating, and while i used two diff PSU's trying to figure the problem out i had the sound card in there the whole time, and now its in my new PC.Its the only part that i have had in both pcs everytime there was problem. Thing is on my last PC i didnt get BSOD, the thing would just freze, the sound would make a weird single tone and i would have to hard reset, the same thing is hapening now expect i got BSOD after the frezze and it rests it self.

They're as good as any software CAN be for hardware diagnosis. Ultimately the only sure fire way of testing hardware is by replacing it and retesting. Software can only do so much, however we use in hope that it can push the limits enough to force the error. But they're never a guarantee. Changing the hardware however, is.

Unlikely. What is your current PSU make and model? Checking the voltages is another one whereby it's only able to see if anything is obviously wrong, but like the MB, is incrediby hard to test without swapping it.

I really would look into the sound card initially. Peripheral components have a notorious habit of becoming outdated. The fact that you can clean installed twice also supports the fact it's a hardware problem.

How would i go about giving a full dump thing like you mentioned?

Both my PSU are corsair PSU's from a few years ago, one is a 1000w and the one im using is 1200w. i think its the RM series ill have to find the 1000w one and check, but they are top quality PSU's.

Problem is as i have cutom loop cooling swaping out he MB,CPU,GPU or SSD are a giant pain in the ass and i dont have spares that fit to test. My PSU is modular and they both use the same cables so that isnt so hard, RAM and my sound card is easy too.

The sound card is old, and like i said it was in my other PC with SEEMED to have SIMILLAR problems. Put that with what colif said when he cheked the dump files intially its starting to look like likey is it not? Could the crashes when nothing was runing maybe be caused by a windows notifcation playing the tone it uses, that beep? The other times it crashed was wathing online video which has sound obv.

Although i still dont get how i can play the most demanding game to date for 12hrs and not have it crash, although in the game the sound does have little pops in it, its not too noticble and its seems mostly the music in game, no one esle seems to having the issue, if i wasnt so much into music, audiophile, i might not have noticed. I can listen to my music or video auido without issues.

It'd be through Colif's BSOD guide but instead of configuring for minidumps, you configure for full. It just MIGHT serve useful if it can give us more info and tell us what component might be causing it. I've got some colleagues who are far more advanced than I at analysing dump files and they'd be able to tell us what's what with a full dump if it does indeed capture useful information.

At this point looking at the dumps, we can deduce that it's NOT anything. Because they are all WHEA - but what we can see is what it might be. In effect, any of the "drivers / third party modules" running could potentially help indicate what might be creating the issue, and the sound card age is a red flag, as Colif states, I would absolutely remove it, and if the BSOD continues, at least you've eliminated a component from suspicion.

Although i still dont get how i can play the most demanding game to date for 12hrs and not have it crash
Again, windows internals operates in unique ways, and lots of times, your OS is actually doing all the event and fault recitifcation behind the scenes, the BSOD will only occur when something critical occurs that the OS can't handle in a sense. So it's not always that a hardware error should be incredibly easy to replicate an error with, because it completely depends on how your OS is using that hardware, and how, when, and why the hardware is causing an issue.

It could be quite sporadic that a piece of hardware throws out an issue, and only at that point your OS tries to manage it and can't then leads to hangs, crashes, and bug checks.

Ok, I will do the tests, set for a full dump file today and get back you ASAP. Because of what going on it might be after xmas before i have enough time at once to pull the sound card and get a adapter. Right now all the stuff i have beein doing including replying here has been in the odd spare moments. It going to almost impossible to get enough time in one block to do much.

Thank you all so much for all your help and pass my thanks on to anyone who has helped me at your request, i rellly aprciate it, i just a hardware guy, im good at building flashy show PC's but this has been so far beyond me i wouldnt have a chance without your help. Like i said fixing this means a great deal to me for many reasons. Microsoft should be payign yall for what you do isntead of the shmucks i dealt with at the start of this they do pay.

Focus on you and your family first. It's more important. We can be here in any free time. So we can hang about as long as needed (Colif may speak for himself there!). Most importantly, enjoy your christmas with your family my friend.

Sorry we haven't been able to get the crux of it just yet, but I'm sure we will.

Oddly enough, the people I am training under at the moment are largely MVP and ex-programmers for example, where they've done so much voluntarily windows analysis they get recognised my MS themselves, and MS got rid of a big bunch of their team that used to do the advances analysis - so unfortunately, it is often volunteers that give the real value in the community now.

Thank you for the kind words, but I know i'm still learning every day. Hopefully we can find out your issue soon enough (and I'll employ help in the background if I can!).

Thank you so much.

just got antoher whea, i have added what i hope is the full dump if i got it right.

I will continue with hardware tests ASAP. When i run memtest i heard i have to do 8 passes, do they all have to be done one right after the other? or can i do two 4 pass sets? because it takes like 5 hrs to do 4 passes
