Intermittent black screen: GPU, monitor or others?

I am currently using a GTX 970.

Lately, i have been getting a black screen randomly with the monitor stating "no display" but sound continues to play for a while more. Sometimes when i restart, everything is back to normal. Other times, can't even get the BIOS post screen initialisation text to display.

Once, i entered BIOS and the black screen happened. This led me to wonder if it's the GPU or other hardware causing it since the driver for the GPU has not even been loaded yet? Or is my understanding wrong?

This is almost never the monitor. But easy to find out, try another one or try yours on another computer. Try another cable.

Most likely the video card or power supply issue.
