Alright, I guess I should start by saying hello, I've browsed these forums for info a few times before and I've been searching through it a lot recently due to this new problem.
To start off, yes, I did go through that checklist topic through step 23, the problem here is that the problem is intermittent so all of a sudden it will boot up normally and there's no way for me to know if I fixed something until it comes back the next day.
My system was in a cheap Rosewill Blackbone case,
3.1Ghz Core i5-2400 Sandybridge
Mobo: MSI P67A-GD65
PSU: Raidmax Hybrid 2 RX-530SS 530w
GPU: MSI N550GTX-Ti Cyclone II (GTX550Ti)
8 GB RAM
An Asus DVD drive
1TB WD Caviar Black and 3TB Seagate Barracuda
Running Windows 7 64-Bit
Earlier this week I upgraded, I upgraded to a 750W Corsair HX750 PSU, I put an Asus brand GTX570 in added 2 more sticks of RAM for new total of 16GB (yes, same brand, type, matching RAM sticks, Gskill ripjaws 1333mhz if that matters), I added an Asus Blu-Ray drive and put it all in a Cooler Master HAF 932.
The problem I have is this, when I first put the machine back together, it worked flawlessly, I installed the drivers for the GPU and everything and was ready to go. Played the crap out of Skyrim with no issue, even tested my GPU with FurMark because I was thinking about overclocking it a bit and it was fine throughout, never even got above 61 degrees C.
The next morning I got up, turned it on to check the weather and stuff, no issues there. Shut it down and went to work, stopped by my house on my lunch break, again turned on without issue, the problem started when I first got home from work.
I hit the power switch, fans spun up, HDDs turned on, power light went on, but no beeps, it never passed post and shut right off. Then it turned back on and kept cycling through that over and over again and I had to switch off power on the PSU to stop it. Turned it back on, same problem, turned it back on again, booted up just fine. Read a bit online about this kind of problem. Shut it down, disconnected the top IO panel after reading that Cooler Master has had some issues with it, shorted pins on mobo to start it up, same issue. Powered it down again, then powered back up and turned it on, boots perfectly, runs perfectly, played the crap out of Skyrim some more even, absolutely no problems whatsoever.
I've checked everything 1-23 on the checklist topic, when I reaseated the GPU it started working again and I thought I fixed it, wrong! Problem came back later. Reaseated the RAM, left the new sticks out, it booted up fine, went through checking individual memory slots, no issues, put all the memory back in, no issues. Rebooted it a few more times at different intervals throught the rest of the night until I went to bed. Tried to boot it this morning, same issue is back. Tried clearing CMOS, didn't help, pulled the side door off again to check it, tried booting it up, it booted up just fine and I'm hear typing right now, computer runs absolutely 100% perfect once it's booted. No high temps, no suttering, freezing, no random shutdowns, nothing.
I have not yet tried the "disconnect everything except CPU and HSF" test or breadboard test yet for 2 reasons, the first being that at the moment I need to get a video project done and I have been able to successfully boot the computer, so I need to get that done first before I do anything more time consuming. The second issue is that again, the problem is intermittent. I could breadboard it and it will run find, shove everything back into the case and it will run fine again so I would have no way of pinpointing the issue.
One thing I am going to do once I'm done with this video project is put my old video card back in, use it for a while and see if the problem comes back, if it does I will then put my old PSU into the case and use it for a while and see if the problem comes back or not there.
One other thing to note is that almost every time I've cracked the case open and messed around in there, no matter what it is I touched, it seems to boot up fine the next time around, part of me is wondering if there is an intermittent short in the case fan on that side panel and every time I shake it it's making the short go away. It also seems the problem is more likely to come back overnight, it's been very cold this week which I'm wondering would be enough to put the fan back into the state where it's shorting (again, assuming it actually is shorting).
I'm not out of ideas to troubleshoot this thing yet, but I figured posting this here early I could have some more suggestions by the time I do run out of ideas. Sorry if I repeated anything in this post or if I skipped something, I've been trying to run through my head everything I've already done, it's been stressing me out these last few days after my initial excitement of having a better video card and bigger case with better cooling.
