[SOLVED] Internal connection between two PCs seems to max at 50 MB/s

PC (wired)

• On-board Realtek RTL8111H Gigabit NIC (2014 model)
• Wired directly to a BT Smart Hub 1 802.11ac wireless router
• Windows Settings shows a link speed of 1000/1000 Mbps

Server (wireless)

• Addon XWP3000R 802.11ax wireless NIC
• Latest Intel AX200 drivers (v22.40.0, dated March 2021)
• Wirelessly connected to the BT Smart Hub 1 wireless router
• Windows Settings shows a link speed of 866/866 Mbps
• Appears to have full wireless signal strength

When I transfer files from the PC to the server, the speed varies between roughly 30 MB/s and 70 MB/s (very variable, even during the same transfer).

When I transfer files from the server to the PC, I get a constant 47 MB/s transfer speed. I was expecting (hoping?) for around 120 MB/s (Gigabit).

Any ideas?

The wireless link is the weakest link. 866Mbit link speed will have an effective transfer rate of 450Mbit. 450Mibt / 8 bits per byte gives 55MB/s throughput. You are getting exactly what you should be.

Because it is WIFI. 866Mbit is dual stream 80Mhz 5Ghz. That is a typical link rate for 5Ghz WIFI.

Because that is not the link speed. It represent the MCS encoding value. It only represents link speed in artificial test conditions. You will be extremely lucky to get 1/2 those values.

...........as a added comment your fancy wifi6 card is actually limiting your speed. it is dropping back to 802.11ac since that is all your router supports but unlikely your router it only can run 2x2 mimo. Your router supports up to 4x4, not that a 4x4 802.11ac card is going to be much faster. Maybe you get 500mbps rather than 400. It is very hard to get 4x4 to work which is why most wifi6 stuff does not support it yet.
