Hi all,
I recently stumbled upon this site, what a wealth of information! I'm hoping somebody may be able to help solve an issue for me, at this point I'm even ok with being told my desktop components are just too old! First, as many of you will probably be able to tell from my lack of computer "lingo" I'm not the most computer savvy.
I own a Gateway GT5648E. I think its about 4 or 5 years old. Other (maybe) pertinent info:
Processer: AMD Athlon 64 X2 dual core processor6000+ 3.00GHz
RAM: 4GB 32bit operating system
This desktop came with a 320GB hard drive. I recently purchase a Seagate Barracuda 2 TB 7200rpm internal drive as a secondary storage drive (I wanted to transfer a bunch of music, photos, etc from a couple of smaller external drives) from Best Buy. I've had nothing but issues since then!
My first problem was trying to format the new drive. Couldn't get past a certain point. Seagate advised me to return the drive and get a new one, which I did. Had the exact same problem. After reading forum after forum and trying multiple solutions (yes, all of my drivers have been updated), I had my drive formatted in a friend's computer. Voila!- Installed it into my tower and it seemed to work. However, now that I've tried to transfer files over to it things were moving ridiculously slow- 10GB of music took about 2.5 days and then I got an error message stating "attempting to copy to the disk failed. The disk could not be read from or written to."
I actually spoke with sombody from Best Buy (as my computer is out of warranty with Gateway and I'd have to pay for tech support) and he said my internal components may be too old. If this is the case, I will gladly move on, but I'm wondering if anyone here who is much more knowledable than I has any ideas/fixes to try.
Thanks so much for reading!
