So today I just installed a second Seagate 4TB SSHD after my first one was beginning to fill up. Yesterday, everything seemed fine, but after I installed my second drive majority of the files on my first HDD decided to disappear such as my movies, TV shows, pictures and music. My steam games stayed and all my other documents, but these seemed to disappear. I've tried switching around the SATA points on my motherboard, tried removing my HDD for 30 minutes, but nothing has changed. Now I just installed some other stuff such as new fans and LEDs so I thought it could be a power supply issue. I disconnected the lights and the new HDD but nothing changed. But I have a 650W power supply and don't really have any power hungry components in my build so I don't believe this is the issue. However, the other day, this HDD decided to stop working all together but I simply pushed the cables back into the HDD (even though I didn't see any visible disconnections) and it proceeded to work fine. Thankfully I was able to save my uni work but I've lost all my movies and TV shows that I've spent 6+ years collecting and priceless photos. Can anyone help at all? I'm completely lost. Thank you to everyone that has input.

NB: I get this message that pops up when I try to open my movies (does it for all other missing files):

D:\Media\Movies is unavailable. If the location is on this PC, make sure the device or drive is connected or the disc is inserted, and then try again. If the location is on a network, make sure you're connected to the network or intranet, and then try again. If the location still can't be found, it might have been moved or deleted.

The problem is, I never touched anything, and I am very particular about my files so I know I didn't do anything to jeopardise them.

Hello!

This definitely sounds like drive failure, at this stage you can plug your HDD into a HDD caddy and attempt to read it as an external device to see what you can get off of the drive, but either way your HDD has failed unfortunately. If it is under the warranty period you can get a replacement, if not then you will need to buy another drive.

I hope this helps :)

Hey there, Bosch82.

It really sounds like the drive is failing, so you got the new one just at the right time. Having issues accessing specific directories or partitions is a sign of a faulty drive, so good job on backing up your important work. As for the rest of your files, the photos are a priority, because they are irreplaceable. What I'd recommend is to give it a go with a different SATA port and different SATA cables (both data and power), just to check if it's a faulty cable or port and if the files and folders show up. It would be even better if you could give it a try with a different computer as well.
If that doesn't work, you should try accessing the drive via Ubuntu Live USB/DVD, hoping that this OS can read the partitions and the data properly so that you can back it up. If that fails as well, your next step would be data recovery software: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/filerecovery/tp/free-file-recovery-programs.htm. If that fails as well, your last resort would be a data recovery company. You could contact the HDD manufacturer's customer support and ask for more help with that.

edit: looks like you've received an answer while I was typing; go ahead and try everything possible. :)

Just to clear that up, it does not seem like an issue related to an underpowered drive.

Hope that helps. Please keep me posted.

Yeah I was afraid it was going to be a hard drive failure. Seeing that I got the exact same one reckon I should do the dirty and send it back and say the new one was faulty? Would save me some cash hahaha because after all not like the company I use would lose a lot of money. But thanks for the help, not what I was hoping for of course, but it did give me some closure. Now to remember the beautiful times I had with all my movies and TV shows. RIP 🙁

Thanks mate :) Figured this might be the problem. Unfortunately not what I was hoping for, but at least I know what is going wrong now. I'll let you know if something at all changes :)

I'm glad I helped :)
