Hi everyone,
While i was away at university my home computer experienced hardware problems and no longer works (CPU red light issue M5A99FX Pro R2.0 mobo). I don't have the funds to change any components or take it into a computer store to fix at the moment. I took the secondary internal hard drive out of the case and I connected it to my laptop through a set of external wires that allow me to connect the power connector directly to an electrical outlet and the data connector to the laptop via USB.
Now the issue is that the laptop provides a notification sound that a device has been plugged in but in the "My Computer/This PC" section it doesn't show up. It was formatted as an NTFS device and was running windows 10 home smoothly no problems. I do have an old version of the software called Disk Genius which is supposed to be able to recover files to an extent. Strangely the disk genius program recognises the hard drive and it shows up. I'm currently running a scan to try and recover the files on it. It's a 1TB hard drive, the scan is 86% done at over 8 hours long. I'm hoping I can recover my files on it and that it works.
My question remains though, how do I get the hard drive to show up in the "my computer/this pc" area? The disk genius program did a quick smart health check and both drives and their sectors seem to be intact. If I leave the drives dormant (not in use) for a few months until I can get some new parts will they still be bootable/run internally? I don't have any friends or neighbours around that have desktop pc that I can connect the drives internally to in order to run them and get my files.
Many of my files are important family media and also university research documents that I would like to keep for long term purposes. Quick note on backups: I have an external Western Digitial my book hard drive which is old as well. Unfortunately I tried plugging that into my laptop and found that the old connector doesn't work. It's not under warranty anymore as it's so old (over 9 years) but if I open it up I still wouldn't be able to access it as the WD security firmware built into the chipset for external use prevents the option to directly access that drive. So my backup is basically useless and not accessible either.
My internal hard drives are old and not SSD's. They are WD Blue's, one is a model from 2013 and the other is from 2014. Any suggestions? I live in the Caribbean, Trinidad and Tobago. It's very expensive to buy parts here/replace them and also expensive to buy parts from abroad. There aren't any main repair places down here or recovery centres. Also, as a university student with a lot of debt on me right now I can't afford any paid recovery options.
