Hi everyone,

While i was away at university my home computer experienced hardware problems and no longer works (CPU red light issue M5A99FX Pro R2.0 mobo). I don't have the funds to change any components or take it into a computer store to fix at the moment. I took the secondary internal hard drive out of the case and I connected it to my laptop through a set of external wires that allow me to connect the power connector directly to an electrical outlet and the data connector to the laptop via USB.

Now the issue is that the laptop provides a notification sound that a device has been plugged in but in the "My Computer/This PC" section it doesn't show up. It was formatted as an NTFS device and was running windows 10 home smoothly no problems. I do have an old version of the software called Disk Genius which is supposed to be able to recover files to an extent. Strangely the disk genius program recognises the hard drive and it shows up. I'm currently running a scan to try and recover the files on it. It's a 1TB hard drive, the scan is 86% done at over 8 hours long. I'm hoping I can recover my files on it and that it works.

My question remains though, how do I get the hard drive to show up in the "my computer/this pc" area? The disk genius program did a quick smart health check and both drives and their sectors seem to be intact. If I leave the drives dormant (not in use) for a few months until I can get some new parts will they still be bootable/run internally? I don't have any friends or neighbours around that have desktop pc that I can connect the drives internally to in order to run them and get my files.

Many of my files are important family media and also university research documents that I would like to keep for long term purposes. Quick note on backups: I have an external Western Digitial my book hard drive which is old as well. Unfortunately I tried plugging that into my laptop and found that the old connector doesn't work. It's not under warranty anymore as it's so old (over 9 years) but if I open it up I still wouldn't be able to access it as the WD security firmware built into the chipset for external use prevents the option to directly access that drive. So my backup is basically useless and not accessible either.

My internal hard drives are old and not SSD's. They are WD Blue's, one is a model from 2013 and the other is from 2014. Any suggestions? I live in the Caribbean, Trinidad and Tobago. It's very expensive to buy parts here/replace them and also expensive to buy parts from abroad. There aren't any main repair places down here or recovery centres. Also, as a university student with a lot of debt on me right now I can't afford any paid recovery options.

Help! My computer experienced a hardware issues a few months ago while I was away at university. It was a CPU red light error on the mobo. When I got home to check it out I couldn't find out what the issue was. I took out the cpu and checked it thoroughly for any bent pins but there weren't any. The thermal paste was all good but I removed it and reapplied a fresh coat anyway. Checked the connectors for the power and fan header for the cpu fan (Hyper 212 EVO) and everything was good. It made no sense, to my knowledge CPU's don't just die like that so I figured it might be the motherboard and sure enough there were quite a few cpu red light issues for the mobo that showed up on searches online but all of the issues were completely different from what I experienced leaving me further baffled to what was going on.

I took a look over the mobo itself and looked for any burn marks or broken capacitors or pieces but nothing was amiss. I powered on the system and all the fans will come on and the power/hard drive led lights on the front of the chassis show up. But nothing boots up and no POST. The only thing that pops up on the mobo itself is the red light for a cpu error. It made no sense.

I disconnected everything and put it all back together and still this is the same issue that arises. I can't afford to repair or replace any components right now and there aren't any friends or neighbors that have spare parts I can try or have a spare desktop I can connect my internal hard drives to recover my files from. I would like some help if anyone can shed some light on reasons why this issue might have happened? I do live in the Caribbean on islands where it's hard to get parts due to expense besides the fact that I'm a uni student.

My build specs are as follows: AMD FX 8350, Asus M5A99FX Pro R2.0, 16 GB (2 x 8GB) Gskill Ripjaw blue DDR3 ram, WD Blue Hard Drive formatted to NTFS running windows 10 home, case is an old Cooler Master HAF Full tower, EVGA PSU 1300WATTs (I got it on a special discount at the time if you're wondering why I have such a high watt psu), AMD Radeon HD 6450 graphics card, cooler master hyper 212 evo cpu cooler.

Note: the pc is about 5-6 years old. It worked flawlessly for many years, it worked flawlessly the day before it gave the error. According to my parents they woke up the morning of and pressed the power button on and the pc didn't start up. They saw the red light on the mobo through the transparent side door of the case. Any suggestions as to what happened? I have no access to multimeters to check voltage etc.. of the mobo and have no funds and no way to replace/repair. If there are any suggestions as to something I overlooked it would be great to know in case i can still get this old beast up and running again.

I tried powering on with one of each of the ram sticks in their correct dimm slots for being run single handedly, tried running with the hard drives connected and disconnected, did try replacing the graphic card with an older radeon 4250 but nothing worked.
