Hello,

Recently I purchased a WD Black 6 TB and I've been having issues with it disconnecting when transferring large files onto it. What makes this problem unique is that I have had this issue before on a separate install of windows and also on a different drive. I have ran a chkdsk on the drive that has found no problems whatsoever (for reference the other hard drive I had had a ridiculous amount of bad sectors) and I have used different cables and plugged it into different sections of my motherboard. This hard drive is my third hard drive and I'll post the specs of the other drives below.

What I'm thinking is that I have some sort of motherboard problem, but I have switched the position on the hard drive several times to no avail (including putting it where my SSD is right now).

Something to note is that when looking at the temperature of the drives, this drive in particular runs about 10 degrees hotter than my other drives for reasons I'm not quite sure of.

EDIT: Something I forgot to mention is that after the drive disconnects it immediately reconnects. And the issue is also when writing files to the drive itself.

Any help would be appreciated!

Specs:

Intel Core i7 4770k
16 GB RAM DDR3
MSI Z97 Gaming 5 Motherboard
Nvidia Geforce GTX 970
Seagate 3TB
238GB Samsung SSD 840 PRO
Wester Digital Black 6 TB (The drive in question)
Asus Essece STX II

Hey there, @BlindCaesar!

I'm sorry that you encounter such issues with your WD Black! :/ Have you tried connecting it to another computer and checking how the transfer of large files would affect the HDD there? I'd suggest you do so as it will help us determine whether or not the WD Black is the source of your issues. Another thing you might be willing to try is disconnecting your other secondary drive and leaving just the booting SSD plugged and the WD Black. Afterwards, attempt to transfer some large files from an external source (e.g. external HDD, BluRays, DVDs, NAS, etc.).
I'd also recommend checking your motherboard manufacturer's official website for any SATA controller & Chipset driver updates. While on it, make sure you also...

I'd also recommend checking your motherboard manufacturer's official website for any SATA controller & Chipset driver updates. While on it, make sure you also have the latest BIOS version installed.
However, I'd strongly advise you to backup all important files from the WD Black somewhere else before proceeding with the troubleshooting. Better safe than sorry, right?
As for the temperatures, they shouldn't be above 55°C (operating) & 70°C (non-operating) as you can see from the Specs sheet here.

Keep me posted with the troubleshooting!

The only thing that worked for me: DISCONNECT YOUR WIFI FROM USB, connect you HD! Voila... Very odd problem and solution so far. Maybe is the PSU not suplying enough power.
