Internet Connection Problems

Hello

We recently moved into a new house and since then we have had trouble with our internet (the phone line works fine). We are with Telstra and they suggested getting a new modem due to the incredibly old modem we had. So we bought a new modem from Telstra (probably not the best idea) but still the same problems occur
I have no idea what's wrong but I doubt it's a modem issue.

To clarify we are connected to the network but simply not getting stable internet. Sometimes the Internet is normal other times it is incredibly slow (dial up speed) and most of the time we simply get no internet at all.

P.S. I am a noob when it comes to these sort of things so I may not understand some things also if this is the wrong thread please redirect to the right one. Finally for anyone who really wonders how I am typing this I am using my crappy 3G phone net

Edit: So uh the internet started working two days (one day after I did my intial post) after I installed the new modem. Not sure if my internet is permanently fixed but so far no problems.

Maybe I'm wrong but I think my new Modem is the reason for the fix perhaps it took a while to get adjusted to our network (again not network savy so note sure if that makes sense).

Check your phone lines. For testing, try to connect the modem directly to the incoming line (not to a phone jack).
Make sure all of your land-line phones are connected thru DSL filters.
Check your security system (or anything which is connected to the land line) for this filter as well. The modem itself must be connected straight thru.
