So im on the third floor of a house. The Router (isp is virgin media we have the best package without being a business etc) is on the first floor, more or less directly below me.
My current setup is that i use a tplink which connects to it via a wireless connection and then an ethernet cable goes from the tplink to my pc. With this current setup i get around 9 ping, 40 down, 3 upload Which is fine but it is super unstable. If someone is using the wireless internet mine starts to drop heavily, im talking 100+ ping, 10 down, below 1 upload.
Im aware wiring a cable up is an option but i cannot do that, Powerline adaptors are worse than the wireless adaptor i currently use. Would getting a different router have much effect? or is there another alternative that would work well?

Solution
see if your old router does 5k band. if not look at one of the newer gaming mio routers with more then two ant. also for your pc try a high powered usb wifi or make sure your using a 5e or better cable.
