Our phone company in canada is going to stop suppling internet connection via a phone line.
They do offer fibre optic which is faster.
How does that compare with internet fron a satellite?
What are these 3 types called?
We have laptops and tablets.
Thanks
The satellite one would i assume work away from home.
No smartphone!

Satellite internet server wouldn't work away from your home because you wouldn't have the dish or receiver.

Does the fibre still use a modem? We have to figure out where to put the wire through the wall. It arrives at a utility pole
Thanks
Ps how do those with smartphones get the internet?

Sort of, yes.

There is a connection device at the terminator of the fiber.
It converts whatever is coming in the fiber line to coax or ethernet inside your house or building.

MODEM - MOdulator/DEMmodulator.

Whether you get your signal via phone line, coax, fiber, satellite...there is always some connetion device that can be refereed to as a 'modem'.

Smartphones get their internet from a cell tower. Which is a modem...;)

So they still need to drill a hole in the house wall?
It all comes to a box and transmits as wifi?
Wondering how to connect the tablets, windows 7 laptop and chromebook .
Cant run cables to them all!

There is a box somewhere in or on your house. The fiber comes to that box. It is then changed into either standard ethernet or ethernet over coax.
If you tell us your ISP and country we might be able to better understand how that specific company does their installs.

It needs to come from outside to inside.
So yes, a hole.

But in all my installs, either cable or fiber, I've never seen that 'hole' to be intrusive.

As far as WiFi....generally, you want anything that does not absolutely NEED WiFi to be wired.
Desktop PCs, TV, etc.

WiFi is reserved for those things that cannot have a physical cable from the modem/router.

First post says canada. Probably telus
Thanks
Then I would suggest you google "telus canada fiber install images" You will see boxes like this -- https://forums.redflagdeals.com/telus-fibre-optic-install-home-alarm-question-2331543/#&gid=1&pid=3 But I also see other types.
It is possible the hardware changes depending on what services you buy. For example, the picture I linked had landline phone service. If you only get internet service the hardware might be different.

Did the cable go thru the attic or crawl?
We will definitely need it converted to wifi. Is that still faster than the phone version to wifi.
Thanks
Btw telus after several tries was unable to tell me anything about all this!

Mine goes from the interior garage wall, along the ceiling line (mostly invisible because it is a white coax), then to the router.

Your install may be completely different.

That the ONT needs to be in the garage does not automatically mean the "router" needs to be in the garage.

Talk to your installer guy either on the install day, or before, to see what options are available.

Speedtests over WiFi are irrelevant.

But a fiber connection should be, when testing via Cat5e, much better than your current DSL.

Why are speedtest over wifi irrelevant?

Far too many things can affect.

In my house, I can see a major difference at one end of the upstairs hall from the other.
In the same room, I can see a difference between 2 different devices.

Wired directly to the router is the only real way to test your actual internet connection speed.
WiFi is subject to all sorts of weirdness.
