Internet Connectivity Issue

When using Windows 8 when I toggle to the Windows 8 apps when I try to open it continues to say that I am not connected to the internet. But when I go to the desktop and log on to the internet, the internet works fine. I live in China and I use a VPN (witopia & Astrill). Can you help with this problem?
