Question Internet cuts out randomly for 5-10 seconds then comes back ?

I've been facing this issue for the past week or so. This is happening on very random intervals like it can happen multiple times a day or none at all.

I cannot notice this issue at all unless i am gaming in which case my game freezes and comes back (i am not getting kicked out) The PC still recognizes it as if i am still receiving internet. Upon trying to open a website during this time it'll show an error message "DNS server cannot be reached"

Debug log on the router has the following lines after every incident:

2024-12-20 22:57:01 [Debug][Debug-Log] static:ETH Port 4 link status changed to Down, Rate is --, Work Mode is --
2024-12-20 22:57:01 [Debug][Debug-Log] static:[L2M]upport state change process. Status=down.
2024-12-20 22:57:01 [Debug][Debug-Log] static:[WAN_MNGT] ipv6 if set wan state down, wan Index=0x10101001.
2024-12-20 22:57:01 [Debug][Debug-Log] static:[WAN_MNGT] ipv4 if set wan state down, wan Index=0x10101001.
2024-12-20 22:57:01 [Informational][Debug-Log] static:SRV_COMM_RegCloudWan [index_0x10101001]
2024-12-20 22:57:01 [Debug][Debug-Log] static:default route is deleted due to wan down
2024-12-20 22:57:05 [Informational][Debug-Log] static:[dhcp6s]dhcp server configure file dns[fe80::101]
2024-12-20 22:57:07 [Debug][Debug-Log] static:ETH Port 4 link status changed to Up, Rate is 1000 Mbit/s', Work Mode is Full-duplex

Tried resetting the router and changing DNS to no avail.

Could this just be an issue at the ISP's end? I really am not very good when it comes to resolving networking issues and don't even have a clue on where to start troubleshooting if there is something that can be done and it is indeed an issue on my end.

All depends on what ETH port 4 means.

I am going to guess you have some kind of modem or fiber termination box that the router wan port plugs into ?

If this is the wan port I would try the simple thing first. Try a new ethernet cable. You need nothing special cat5e is fine but be sure it is not one of the flat cables. Those have wires that are below the minimum size in the specifications for a ethernet cable.

Do you know if the box that the ISP wire/fiber comes into is having some kind of issue. Does it appear to reboot or do the lights change. maybe there is a issue with the internet connection coming to your house.

This is going to be tricky to catch since it appears to only go down for a few seconds each time.

If ETH port 4 goes to your PC you would try a new cable there first. I suspect it is not going to your pc. You generally get a message if the ethernet port on the pc goes down. I guess if you are fast enough you might be able to test with your phone when you get a failure. If it is the WAN port both the pc and the phone would have issues at the same time.

Hello, so it happened again today and this time i was within eye distance to see if the lights change. I am not sure with the correct terminology when it comes to these devices so try to stay with me.

The box that the fiber goes into shows only green lights during the shutdown, but the router that it plugs into shows a static red light for the 5 ish seconds that the internet is down for.

Also if this matters: The internet goes down entirely, meaning both wifi and wired devices stop receiving connection during the time period.

If i am understanding this correctly based on your help, the issue is with the WAN port. Could that be it? The ethernet cable is fairly new at around 7 months old. Would be a bummer to have it fail that early but i guess it is not impossible and thankfully they're fairly inexpensive.

Thank you for your response!

A bad cable is much better than some kind of defect in the router port or electronics. Although painful to test on errors that do not even consistently happen daily you could try a ethernet cable directly to the modem and eliminate the router.

Do you know if the fiber modem has any ability to log into it. Something like a cable modem you can get into and see signal levels and such and logs if the internet itself would restart.

Then again what generally happens if the fiber goes down is the ethernet cable between the modem and the router stays up but there is nothing to talk to. In those cases all the lights look fine and everything appears up it just doesn't work.
