Internet Exploer and Chrome - are they compatible?

I need an older version of IE to access (via WHALE Communications) my work desktop but need something more up to date to access my own email and other websites. Google Chrome now seems not to work after Windows updates.

chrome and IE and to totally separate programs that do not inter-operate at all. windows updates would also not affect chrome. best bet is to just re-install chrome.
