internet game can anyone help

I've been playing on dial up with friends for months no problem. Now i've up
graded to broadband they haven't. When we try to play now the game freezes
all the time. Can anyone please give me any clues as to the problem

When I play online it sometimes hangs at 100% CPU utilisation for a couple
of minutes then springs back to life. It always recovers though.
