Internet is extremely slow after installing Linux Mint

Hi,

I am new to using Linux, I recently migrated from using Windows 7 so I know every little about this OS. I originally actually installed Ubuntu, but removed it because my internet was extremely slow on it. After installing the latest version of mint, I am having the same problem again. As a result, I am suspecting that this may be a driver problem. But this time I want to actually fix it rather than remove Linux. I am running Mint on dual boot alongside windows. I am using a TP-LINK TL-WN822N wireless WiFi USB adapter.

Sometimes, on Firefox, pages just fail to load or is extremely slow to load up. I also tried to install steam, when it opens up it does the initial update process where it fails and says no network is connected. This is strange because according to Linux I am connected to my WiFi hub router.

Any suggestions?

try turning off ipv6, it should be somewhere in the internet settings, meaning your wireless settings, not your browser. there should either be a turn off option or an ignore option. post back to see if that works. i use to have this problem too until i did endless searching on this issue. turning off ipv6 solved my problem.

I have turned of ipv6 yet the problem still persists

hmmm, that's weird, worked for me. also making sure your linux is fully updated worked for me also. either that, or your tp is not supported that well, i have a laptop wireless 1350 intel card that refuses to work and is buggy, probably might want to invest in a new wireless adapter.

also, did you reboot after you turned off ipv6?

edit: sorry, i forgot to say that you need to reboot for it to take effect.

hmmm, that's weird, worked for me. also making sure your linux is fully updated worked for me also. either that, or your tp is not supported that well, i have a laptop wireless 1350 intel card that refuses to work and is buggy, probably might want to invest in a new wireless adapter.

Yes I have restarted the pc and it did not fix the problem. Regarding updates, i have tried to download updates but remember that because my internet is slow, updates download at a speed of 50kbs per second :/

RTL8192CU chip and not Atheros.

Uses realtek/mediatek drivers. The default open source drivers are not very good. Suggest you compile and use the proprietary driver mediatek. Maybe Ubuntu/mint have this in the additional driver function?

Go to System Settings -> Additional Drivers. Install all the drivers in that section. (Note: Just guessing here since my GPU and WiFi are Intel whose drivers are all open source).
