Internet is fine but can't download over Wifi

I am hoping to get a solution to the download issue I am having. I am using Verizon FIOS as my ISP with 50/50 speeds.

The modem I am using is the Actiontec MI424WR supplied by Verizon many years ago. I don't use it for WiFi though and have a Apple Airport Extreme through Ethernet attached and then a Airport Express wired to the Extreme.

I don't know enough about the settings for any of these so I only use the default settings.

At any given time I have the following devices attached to my network:
MacBook Air
Mac Mini
HP Windows 7
Dell Windows 8
iPad Air 2
2 iPad Mini 1
2 iPhone 6
iPod
Roku
Apple TV
Vizio Smart TV
Chromecast
PlayStation 3
Nintendo 3DS

The problem I am having seems to be with the WiFi. When I run a speedtest I always exceed the fios speeds I am paying for, usually around 60/60. But when I try to download anything, like El Capitan (6gb) a few days ago. My Mac Mini and Macbook air both said it would take over 1 day to download. I was able to plug my Mini in to the Extreme with Ethernet and download in a few minutes though.

Admittedly, I have my routers in the wrong place. They are next to the ground in the lowest level of my house but my Mini was no more than 10 feet away with no obstructions between it and the router.

Is there anything I can do to improve the speed of my WiFi? As I said, I don't know anything about these devices so I only use default settings. Can I change any of it to make this go faster?

Thanks for your help.

Seems you may want to reboot you modem. But as for speeding up your modem no not really. I think you need to find out the settings for the Verizon FIOS modem and see what they are. Below is a link i this modem is not your model research it by its model name. I would use only one wifi device since you only get one DNS per account. Only one modem/router will be able to connect to the internet.

I don't understand. What settings do I need to look at? I think the modem is fast enough, it's the routers that seem slow for downloading.

Let me get things right, you use the wifi from your apple AirPort Extreme for your wifi connection? you connect the apple to the verizon router correct? if this is the case than maybe the slow down is your old modem. which can be fixed in some cases with a firmware update. I am going to have to study the apple device I do not own one of those so I need info on it.

How old is the modem like in years or months? in the mean time try to access the modem how is below. does this happen on other devices?

accessing the web interface of the modem is done by opening a web browser and type in the address field 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1. if this loads it will be actiontec in the upper left. if you get there click on network connections for me and list what is there. also look for a firmware version ok we can figure this out.

Sorry for my delay I had medical issues

what model number is your apple airport extreme?

Did you turn off the WiFi from the router when you started using the airport extreme for your WiFi? Once you get into the settings of the router you can check the settings for the WiFi than turn the routers WiFi off.

Do you have wifi Security on your extreme? I ask because if the router is configured with wep security and than you have wpa on your extreme that is not something you need. I am saying keep the WPA version on the extreme. WEP is weak protection and it can be broken in a few minutes.

Bandwidth versus Throughput
The first order of business is to understand the difference between bandwidth and throughput. If you understand these terms already, bear with me. Bandwidth is a fixed amount of data speed you pay for and receive from your Internet Service Provider. Throughput is a measurement of data speeds within your local home network. It's common to refer to Internet speed as bandwidth and internal network speed as throughput. For example: Your router may support a theoretical throughput speed of 450Mbps, but your Internet connection may only have bandwidth rates of 20Mbps for downloads and 1Mbps for uploads. With this said follow wht I have posted below if you need help I will be on here.

In a web browser type in 192.168.1.1
This should bring up the routers interface look for WiFi settings and turn it off. Once you turn off the WiFi the WEP Security will be activated. Than
try do download some big and see what time time is. We might have to dig deeper if this does not help.
