Hello, was wondering if anyone could help me trying to get internet to work via Ethernet on an old Windows 98SE Computer has a ethernet Card installed with the latest drivers (Accton en1207d-tx PCI fast ethernet adapter) Also the lights next to the ethernet socket seem to be lit up an says "This device is working properly" in device manager have tried a few guides but when ever i type in "ipconfig" in MS-DOS Prompt it says IP Address : 0.0.0.0, Subnet Mask 0.0.0.0 an I'm pretty sure they have to have some values in? Any ideas how i can get this working? Thanks in advanced.

Hey which connection you are using means fixed wire or wi-fi, subnet mask and IP are many times assigned by internet provider also some people have static IP, I've fixed line brodband at my palce and I have one pc working on 98 SE, but values of subnet and Ip are " - - - - ", just check your connection settings again.

Thanks for the replies using fixed wire connection via ethernet from a Virgin media router > switch box > pc so would i just find out my ip using ipconfig on another computer an then type that in on the windows 98 comp? Thanks

also, do you have it set to obtain ip automatically if modem/router uses DHCP(dynamic) ip?

in cmd window if you type
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
when doing renew does it try to get one? or imediately stop/finish?

i find it weird (maybe win98 issue) that it gives you 0.0.0.0.....most of the time (if memory serves me right) it would at least do internal loop address of 192.?.?.?

another thought
do
ipconfig /all and see if system is recognizing the card properly that way

Okay thanks yeah have it set to "obtain an IP automatically" have tried
ipconfig /release_all
ipconfig /renew_all
but just says 0.0.0.0 every time
and ipconfig /all shows up but the only ones with numbers in are Physical address and DHCP Server thanks again

with it being that old the card may not be working right (even with lights on).

I know this will be shot in the dark but do you have a usb to ethernet dongle and software handy to test?

also, try the cable in on of the laptops to verify cable is good

Is this built in mother board or internal card. I am losing options. If internal card and have install disk, you could try uninstalling driver reinstall, uninstall driver...remove replace card , install drivers.

Been a while since worked on 98SE, last few times I ran into that issue either new card (may be hard to find for 98se, or USB dongle did the trick if everything else failed....not like 98se is going to be blazing fast anyway.

Here is a lonshot test (don't know if system will handle it) but maybe burn a live cd of Unbuntu (run from cd) and see if that will work....but I doubt it (linux not my forte)

Thanks for the help got it working fine now uninstalled the drivers and reinstalled and removed all the TCP/IP entrys an re added them an seems to have done the trick :)

glad to hear that you got it working. With it being 98se i was concerned about removing and reinstalling drivers as for what if the drivers were not readily there or available, would be hard to find them now I would think?

Point is you got it working...take a pic for antique reasons now....LOL
