[SOLVED] Internet speeds/router clarification

So i pay for 200mbps down but im only getting 100 (apparently my router only can do 100?)

this is my router: https://www.asus.com/us/Networking/RT-AC1200/

in the specs list it says it can do above 100.
but according to this review its only up to 100mbps https://www.digitalcitizen.life/asus-rt-ac1200-v2-review/

so what am i missing here? why does the specs list say it can get higher?

also any recommendation for a decent router that can at least reach 200mbps speeds? is something like the Netgear Nighthawk R7000P AC2300 good. i can get one of this used for under 100.

Because the marketing guys are getting away with telling lies. Those are wifi speed numbers and in no way affect the speed you get when you connect via ethernet. All that matters is the speed of the ethernet ports. You need both the WAN and LAN ports to be gigabit. I "think" this is the newer version of the router asus replaced yours with RT-ACRH12. It has gigabit wan and lan ports and costs $59 on amazon. You likely can get even cheaper router from say tplink if you search. Key is that it have gigabit wan and lan ports.

They more represent the way the data is encoded and are some theoritical speed that does not consider any kind of overhead or real life usage considerations. I guess the only good thing is all manufacture pretty much tell the same lies so you to some extent can compare the numbers to see what type of wifi encoding is supported.

maybe your router can do above 100 with only wireless ? and the rj 45 ports are 100 mbps ?? there are such routers .
are you hard wired to your router ?

The specifications you linked to -- https://www.asus.com/us/Networking/RT-AC1200/specifications/ Show that the WAN and LAN wired ports are 100Mbit -- "RJ45 for 10/100 BaseT for WAN x 1, RJ45 for 10/100 BaseT for LAN x 4" With a 100Mbit WAN port, you will NEVER get above 95Mbit. You need a different router if you have 200Mbit ISP service.
