Internet Speeds Seem Slow

So I have a brand new PC, Lenovo desktop etc. I have it hooked up directly to the modem via ethernet cable. Whenever I'm using the PC and my wife is upstairs watching Netflix on the TV or even on her phone using the net, it gets really slow.

I did a speed test and my results are roughly 250+ Ping, average of .45 Mbps download speed and .30 Mbps upload. Is this normal? The modem status page says that the Downstream rate is 1536 kbps and Upstream 480Kbps.

I'm not familiar with reading these numbers. I feel as if it should be faster and not bog down nearly as much as it does... any ideas?

Allennn your mixing up what the OP said.

Downstram (1536Kbps) is what it is supposed to be set at but his Download speed (.45Mbps) his computer 'gets' when his wife is watching Netflix / using Internet Phone. Which is absolutely correct with QoS, which would put the most speed to Movie/Voice feeds, as websurfing isn't 'two way' communication, and has 'delays' (your reading these words is a delay for example). Plus a 1.5Mbps is way old and only good if you have one or two computers on the connection, it isn't capable with this 'Netcentric'...

Where can I find the advertised speed? Our internet is provided for us through my wife's work, so I'm not sure what they got. Can I find the advertised speed on the Modem Status page?

Well with your wife using the internet as well, speeds will get slow. I was noticing extreme lag spikes, and slow downs when i had two different people streaming while i was trying to game

When your wife isn't usng the internet, go to speedtest.net and post your results.

Those are the numbers with nobody on the net besides me running the test. I ran it 4 times in a row at 10am

Yes that is RIGHT.. that is what to expect on such a low end ISP, and would be probably QoS enabled that Videos and Phone service takes 'precedence' over other actions (Gaming, Web surfing, email). I would (as suggested) find out what Internet you got (is this DSL, CableTV, a microwave shot, what is it) then get the contracted agreed to speeds. Far as anyone knows it could be just enough for one computer OR one phone OR one iPhone, etc. can use it once at a time not ALL AT ONCE. Then based on that information talk to your wife, because if they don't increase the speed for your usage included, then your going to be 'reducing' the quality of her phone / netflix usage and pissing her off so you can get 'more speed'.

Is that on wifi? the upload is correct but the DL is crippled... 1536 Kbps = 1.5 Mbps , Not 0.30 Mbps
