The problem:
Over the last week or so, our internet connection keeps randomly dropping. This impacts devices on both wifi and wired connections. Our house is wired for internet, so the wired device (my pc) is connected via an outlet in my office to the router in the laundry room.
A quick restart of the modem/router would fix the problem, but we were doing that multiple times/day. This was with the 6141 and the 4500, both of which are less than 3 years old. I did a full factory reset on the 4500, updated firmware, and removed all but two devices from the network. The internet still went out by the next (yesterday) morning.
Figuring that the 6141 was the newest component, I decided to keep that and went ahead and replaced the router with the Nighthawk. That was last night, and the internet went out again this morning. I figure the problem cannot be with the router at this point, so I fished out an old modem (SB5101U) and hooked that up.
So far it seems to be working fine, but everything also worked okay after resetting the old modem/router combo over the past week, and that still ended up crapping the bed eventually. I'm not optimistic.. Also, this modem is not compatible with my plan, so I'm not getting the download speeds I'm paying for.
I have a tech from Cox coming out tomorrow, but, since we own our equipment, if they determine the problem is on our side, that's a $75 service charge for nothing.
Based on this info, and anything else I can provide, does anyone have any suggestions as to what else I can do to pinpoint the source of this problem?
