When the Canon printer monitor displays that a particular color is low,
should the cartridge be replaced at earliest opportunity, or should I wait
until the monitor displays empty. Is there potential head damage from
letting the cartridge run totally dry?

The cartridge will still have ink remaining in the sponge. To be sure of the
ink level, remove the tank and take a look. Don't let the heads run dry as
there is a high probability of damage.

My real question is "Does the printer report 'empty' when there is still a
little ink left, or does it report empty when it is bone dry?"

If it is like my i965 it reports there is not enough ink to print the
page and won't let you print until you change the cartridge.

Thanks, Sel.

Then it sounds like I can defer replacing the cartridge until that time.
I just need to make sure that I have replacement cartridges handy.
