I have been having mucho problems with my computer (see my earlier post). But now, I think that I have an even bigger problem. Since my computer is going to the blue screen and will not enter safe mode or anything else, I tried booting with my old windows 98se boot disk just to get to an dos prompt. Well, now i have an invalid command.com and it wants me to enter a name or something. What can I do just so that I can reinstall 98se? I am tired of this whole xp stuff, no matter how cute it is.

Thanks for any help!

If all else fails, pull the Hard Drive out. Take it to a working Windows system. Install as slave. Format. Put back in your system. Install Win9x. WinXP really doesn't like older hardware. Run the XP compatibility check from the CD before installing and believe what it tells you.

Well if it's your "old" boot disk you could be missing your command.com on it if you got that error. I think there's a site what www.bootdisk.com? That you can make a new one off of.

Have you tried booting off the XP cd and going into recovery console?

Thanks for all of your help. My cool ass husband ended up playing with the bios and told it to autodetect the HD (i thought it already did) and it finally booted up from win98se boot disk into dos. We have reformated and are installing win9x again.

Thanks for the compatibilbity test tip. If I do that and it has no coflicts, what do you think the prob is? Should I just wait until I can afford to get a new mobo and stuff before i use xp?

Thanks again

Once you get 98SE loaded up and have access to the internet from the machine destined for the install you can run the compatibility check while connected to the internet. XP will look for any updated drivers, patches etc. while doing compatibility check and give accurate report on upgrade possibilities. The best I have been able to do [as far as older/slower systems] is to get XP Pro installed on a K6-II OC'd to 512mhz with 256mb SDRAMM (PC100) and 8meg integrated video. A very stable system suitable for Office Apps and light surfing on the internet. As for games....don't try to go above solitaire with this type config. As you go above these levels the performance increases [had to tweak XP pretty hard to get acceptable performance on above machine]. At about 850mhz Tbird with 256meg DDR and Rage Fury Maxx (64meg twin gpu) you have something that is adequate for all but real power users and hardcore gamers. Again...if the pre-qual test on the XP cd reports no problems (with live 'net connection) things should go pretty much as expected.
