Thanks to you guys here at the forum I was well informed when I made my decision to purcahse and build my first DIY PC. All is well, the PC posted and I have Windows installed. Happy days. Upon pluggin in my miscellanious usb peripherals I noticed that I had effectively jammed a prong on the IO shiled into my usb slot (behind the black bit of plastic). I have tried to pull it out to no avail. What I'm asking: is there any way to remove this probg without having to disassemble my machine? It was stressful enough putting it together in the first place (first build and all). Thanks in advance!

Solution

Anything worth doing, is worth doing correctly. don't make things worse, you may have to re-apply t-paste but it's better than shorting something.

Have a kraken x61 installed. If I remove that will I have to reapply thermal paste? Could I just cut the prong and pull it out?

Unless the cooler prevents you from unscrewing the screws, it's removal is not 100% necessary.

Things to keep in mind though, bumping/twisting the cooler usually breaks existing thermal paste layout which will increase amount of air in between so reapplying it might be necessary nonetheless. (Which you would see on cpu temps after the fix.)

In my opinion, removal of big/bulky coolers would be a necessity. Liquid cooler like kraken, probably not, as mentioned by unksol, you don't need to shift the motherboard a lot to get it free from the io-shield.

Managed to do it without removing cooler as I have no thermal paste to hand atm. Found it difficult to move around the pins with all the fans installed in the case so will buy paste and do it properly in the near future. For now one of the pins is bent backwards! 😛 Thanks for your answers!
