Hi

I'm wondering if anyone could offer some advice please.

I have the above hard drive connected to my router and lately I have been unable to access the data stored on it as its not been showing under "My Computer".

The drive boots up ok (like it used too) and the white light is showing.

I did see something about shares and remapping was mentioned but it by passed me.

Does anyone have anything else I can try ?

If it helps I'm using Windows 7 64 it

Thanks for your help

Ps I've seen there's other threads on here but didn't know whether to add to 1 of them threads or start a new 1 so apologies if I've done wrong.

Hey there again, @DCFC79!

I understand - the data is the most important thing, indeed. I'd definitely give another USB cable a try and also attempt to access the external drive through another computer. Hey there, DCFC79!

I'd recommend you try resolving the issue by re-configuring the external drive as a device on the router. It might also be helpful if you actually reset the router and see if that will help you establish a proper connectivity of the external HDD. Another thing that might help is updating the router's firmware. For this, you should check the router manufacturer's official website or enter the router's configuration interface. I'd also advise you to check how the external will be detected if you swap the USB cable that it's currently plugged with.

Give it a try and keep me posted with the troubleshooting you have done so far!

Thanks for your response

Have reset the router and no change.

Routers firmware is up to date.

Have tried a usb cable and still nothing.

Ive also tried rebooting the drive and then reboot the router and no change.

What I have still to try is:

Remove the drive from the enclosure and put it into a hard drive dock

Connect the drive directly into the pc.

I will keep you updated.

Be careful with the troubleshooting, @DCFC79!
Taking your external drive out of its original enclosure would void the warranty of the product, if it's still covered. I'd simply attempt to plug it to your computer through the USB ports and check how it will get recognized. Make sure you open Disk Management to see how the HDD is listed there.
If you can recognize it successfully like this, back up all the data from the external drive and reformat it from there. Maybe the clean re-formatting procedure will help with the proper detection of the drive on your network.

Keep me posted & Good luck!

Yeh Ive had a look to see if its covered by a warranty, it might be still in warranty, not sure if Id get the data back if I did claim on the warranty.

I did try the usb option but didn't work, Ill give it another try though.

Tried the disk management option and its not recognised with a usb connection.

Its so annoying as 1 minute it was working and next minute its not.

If I were to send it off and Lenovo could access the data would I get a copy of it, that's what I'm concerned about.

Hello there again, DCFC79!

Have you also tried using a different USB cable while connecting to the computer? Check if the detection would improve and make the drive properly recognized. If it still doesn't work, you should contact the external HDD manufacturer's customer support for assistance. Unfortunately, I'm afraid that HDD manufacturers don't provide data recovery services. However, they will surely refer you to a professional partner company for assistance. Data retrieving services usually get your files back on a disk or another hard drive, but they usually don't do any fixing on the problematic HDD itself. I'd suggest you check the warranty on the product, because if it's still covered, you might be able to RMA it and get a replacement from the HDD's customer support.

Hope it helps. Best of luck!

Hi

Yes I understand what your saying about the warranty (if the drive was empty Id claim under warranty) but id rather forgo the warranty and retrieve what data I can, Id rather try to retrieve what data I can and if I cant then so be it.

I only have the 1 usb cable but I have no idea if it works but I could get a second I guess.

Hey there again, @DCFC79!

You could try third-party applications at your own risk to retrieve the files but it's risky, too. Before that, you definitely need to use the HDD manufacturer's brand-specific diagnostic tool or a third-party alternative to test the health and SMART status.

Either way, in order to do all this you will need to get the drive detected by the system first. If the other computer and USB cable didn't help, then you could try taking the HDD out of the enclosure and connecting it internally via SATA, but keep in mind that this would definitely void the warranty on the external!

Good luck and let me know how the troubleshooting is going!

Yes another usb cable is something I will order and see if it works.

Was hoping it would be a simple fix but it appears it isn't the case.

I'm going to make a reminder for myself to back anything up that's important eg use google drive or other cloud storage.

Thanks for your help SuperSoph.
