need to download iomega sphdu driver as my computer no longer recognises the external hard drive

You shouldn't need USB mass storage drivers for any versions of Windows after Win98. Windows has its own native drivers.

That said, you will need a driver if the external HDD has special features such as one-touch backup, capacity indicators, a locked/unlocked LED, etc.
