I was looking for advice on how to redesign my network and what type of servers everyone recommend. I'm not sure if I need Vlans, I was thinking about picking up the Netgear ProSafes Web Unmanaged switch. The idea is to have all rooms have wifi that is on the same network, but not have one router overwhelmed with the amount of data. I have that issue with one of my routers. I'm assuming I'd need several of the same router?
172.16.1.0-99 - Will be Routers and Switch
.1-49 - Will Probably be Routers
Still in the works for switch assignment. Maybe Room 1/Server room .51, .52 for room 2, etc.
172.16.1.100-199 - Will be Servers, Recommendations on Servers to have/need?
Obviously more than I need.
.100 will be DNS.
.110 will be File Server / Media Server.
.120 Print.
.190 Download Server
172.16.1.200-254 - Will be Test Statios & Test VM's
172.16.2.1-254 - Will Be Static IP's for users.
Each room will be allocated roughly 50. Room 1 = 1-50, Room 2 = 51-99, ETC.
.1-5 will be Main PC
.6-10 - Laptops
.11-15 - Tablets
.16-20 - Phones
.11-20 Will Be HTPCs / Rokus
.21-30 - PS, Xbox, Wii, DS, Game Consoles
.31-50 - Not Sure
172.16.3.1-?? - Will be Guests

Solution

That router-switch combination will work just fine.

Static IP's? For instance....".11-15 - Tablets"
What happens when you get a 6th tablet?

Do you think with multiple gaming machines, voice service, file servers, wireless service and a guest network using multiple routers is they way forward presumably with only one incoming pipe? Lets hope he's not trying to use 2/3 domestic routers to achieve this. Where he could use one router and one L3 switch.

Your Square footage is not the issue its the number of devices, number of services and the bandwidth they use.

The plan is to connect the router to a switch that will connect to a switch in each room. To extend the rangr ill either using a few routers in bridge mode or put a repeater around the house.

I definitely dont need vlans. The static ips is for organization and ocd purposes.

Good luck!

Solution

In the IT biz, there is often a thrown around buzzword, SCALABILITY. I call this non-scalable by own's design.

Well at least OP will have lots of opportunity for maintenance, re-calibrate, re-align etc. Will be FUN!
