Hi Guys. I'll try to make this short, hopefully someone can help with the problem I am having.

I live in ontario and have cogeco internet. My ip has been the same for over 8 months now. I called them up today and they said the IP changes yearly. Which is crazy to me, because my old internet company would change just from unplugging for 10 seconds.

Anyways like I said I'm a big gamer, and I play in tournments and stuff online for money, I have gotten ddosed before, and normally I would change my IP, but you see now I can't. I know I can buy a vpn ,but those cost money every month.

Now if I buy a router will I be able to change my IP? or will it be the same as my modem? I have an Arris Touchstone TG2472 cable modem. Let's say I get a router, will the IP still be the same as my modem? and will I be able to change it?

Solution

Your modem does not know a damn thing about the IP you get, it is the ISP's DHCP servers that dictate what IP you get and they usually do so based on the MAC address of the Ethernet adapter making the DHCP request.

If Cogeco works the same way Videotron and Rogers do, you can trick their DHCP servers into giving you a new IP address by making the DHCP lease request using a different MAC address. If you have another PC, unplug power from the modem, connect that other PC, turn the modem back on and check what IP the other PC gets, If I am right, it will get a different IP.
Most cable ISPs' DHCP servers remember what IP address they assigned to a given MAC address for several hours or even days between DHCP lease renewals. If you want to change your IP, you have to change the MAC address requesting the IP. With a router, you can clone your PC's MAC address and when you want to change IP address, you change one number in the cloned MAC address, power-cycle the modem to make it forget the MAC addresses the modem has already handed IP addresses to and you should get a new IP.

So if I buy router I can change IP? Because it's impossible to change IP on this modem. Maybe if someone could help but I don't know. I tried everything.

What you probably have is what is known as a STATIC IP. You HAD a Dynamic (Changing) IP before.

Your modem is recognized by the cable company by the MAC address. They then link the IP to that MAC address for the year. This is your access to the WAN (Wide Area Network aka the internet). You might be able to get them to change it but they probably won't without a good reason.

Adding a router only submits your computer to a new IP address within your LAN (Local Area Network). Your router still has to access your modem. Your modem still has the same WAN IP address. So, in the end, you are still going to have the same WAN address, but your computer will have a LAN address.
