Hey guys! Little bummed here. So my PC was working totally fine. Today, I took out my graphics card and cleaned it with some isopropyl, plugged it into a new spot to see if it ran cooler (it didn't), so I moved it back to it's old spot and it worked fine. PC was running, I played a few games, browsed for a couple hours - then realized I needed to charge my phone. I grabbed a USB, and as soon as I plugged it into my computer (It was a random port on the back), it shut off. It will no longer power on. I have unplugged multiple unnecessary components to test if it is an overpowering issue, but no dice. I have had chargers plugged into the machine before!

I honestly have no idea where to begin troubleshooting. I went through the basics. So - give it to me straight, am I S.O.L?

Edit1: As I do a little more research on my motherboard itself (Gigabyte GA-z68AP) it seems that it has very little support for usb.. Could be on to somethin with this whole usb fried my mobo thing lol

Is there any signs of power at all? The USB sockets should not be able to damage the motherboard, there are protection circuits. It's seems highly unlikely give an iPhone is such little load but I'm wondering if your PSU died, can you test it with a volt meter. I'm on my phone but if you Google PSU paperclip test that might give you some indication if the PSU is dead but it's not a conclusive test.

Well.. Last night I flipped the power switch to off on my power supply and headed to bed defeated. Browsed some mobo's before I went to bed. This morning as I waited for my coffee to brew I decided to give it the ol' college try and flipped the switch on my pc. I hit the power but and... It turned on?

Needless to say I'm stoked, albeit pretty confused. Last night it was completely dead and unresponsive. I guess it just wanted to sleep for a bit? Anyways, I've ordered a new case as mine is not that conducive to good airflow and plan on moving the the unit over to keep it nice and safe. Any tips on cleaning it for general upkeep as I switch cases? Thanks for the response! It makes sense that the USB's would have some sort of protector, and I can imagine it would be hard for a charger to fry the mobo even with a shorting cable.

For cleaning it's best to use a can of compressed air, vacuums can cause static.

Sometime when a power supply shuts off like that it has to be left for a while before it can be switched on. It's just part of the protection circuit. I'm not sure if this is what you meant but do not buy a case & PSU combo, the PSU's are nearly always junk, very low quality units not to be trusted.
